  1. Having recently bought the sony RDR, I have been playing around with it alittle. Very cool machine. I like the idea of recording (old home movies or tv), editing out unwanted stuff and setting manual chapters. VR mode seemed perfect. My HP DVD writer is 300c and it is a +RW/+R type so I don't think I can copy a -RW VR to a +R right? I have two VRs done but not finalized yet, but I don't think that will work even finalized. Anyway, with the reading of different materials and this forum I am at the crossroads. Do you just record your raw video (no chapters set and so on), rip it the video to the hard drive with something like Decrypter, then with for example use a program like DVDAuthor to set chapters, create menus and so on (like I want to do), and finally burn the final project back to a (+R disc in my case) disc. So what are the real advantages of the VR mode to a new guy?

Is there a link I can check out more on that Decrypter. I downed the program and have the newly made VOB files. I just need to read up more on what to do next. What steps and what programs to use next. I have Pinnacle 8 and Roxio DVD 6. Just trying to get some direction. We are all newbies at one time 8) .....but not for long. Thanks for reading

  2. By the way, I read a really good forum article on this site about all the politics and games the manufacturers play with supported media and features.

Is it just me or is all this pretty annoying or what? I am by no means a computer expert, but I can do alot of things. I am not a beginner, but not at the expert level. I just feel sorry for all those people running out buying dvd recording equipment unaware of media restrictions and format compatibilities. I really looked into the DVD-RAM stuff, but it lost my vote with its restrictions. THe whole point about making quality dvds is to share them with friends and family. What the fun if you can only watch them at your house? Just given my two cents............

You don't need DVD Decrypter to rip a DVD you make.

But a commercial DVD ... yes.

I use the PANASONIC DMR-E50 ... and quite often record to DVD-RAM ... the VRO file is basically a mpg-2 video ... I can copy the video from the DVD-RAM to my harddrive and edit out the commercials with Womble mpeg-vcr. Works Great.

I use the Toshiba SD-M1712 to read DVD-RAM in my computer.

I would think you can do the same thing with Womble mpeg-vcr.
