  1. Jev,

How did you get srt subs to display? I installed the latest firmware, but they don't display for me.

    Thanks

  2. Well, I got myself one of those beauties. Two things, though; is there a way this player can play random tracks? Mp3 burned as data on a dvd support is what I was looking for in a long time...but without a way to have them played randomly... .
My second question -hopeing somebody can help me- is, whatever AVI files I have, they play great, except if the audio stream -checked with GSpot- is PCM Audio, it would not work (the image with still play just fine but no audio). So if anyone would give me an advice how to fix these problems I would really apreciated. Or if anyone knows a way of reencoding the audio stream without having to deal with sync problems as DrDivx and VirtualDub are giving me for the past 3 days that would be great !
    Thank you!

Out of all the people that have had something bad to say about this unit, I'm surprised no one has offered to sell their's to you.

The new region hack works great on this (don't know how many of you looked up the hack). No need to keep switching back and forth between regions.

It's: Keep the tray open, hit 7,8,9 then ok, then 0 for region free....a 0 should appear in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.

so now its region free, macrovision free, and plays everything I throw at it

I know, but this only lists US stores. The problem is Philips Canada doesn't sale this one. I don't know why all those american stores won't ship it to me, it's not like I'd pay them in canadian dollars! lol. Anyway, I usually get what I want, I guess I'll have to work a little harder on this one. My dad's a trucker, I made him stop at 4 walmarts in the middle east, none of them had those in stock... grrrrrrrrr

I didn't know the Canadian trucks travelled as far as the Middle East. Maybe you mean the Midwest? Why won't you ask your dad to stop at one of the Targets around there. I saw a whole pile of Philips 642 boxes on the shelf in the Target store near my house. Besides, there are Best Buy's, CompUSA's, Circuit Cities...

I ordered this player through http://www.audiooutfitter.com in Kansas. They shipped the player to me in Saskatchewan, Canada without any duties charged when it was delivered. It arrived in about 10 days on a ground shipment. I am pleased with this player and it did respond to the 7+8+9 ok +0 hack that is posted in the hack section.

    Cheers

  11. Just in case you missed it this player is available from http://www.audiooutfitter.com in the U.S. and they will ship to Canada. I paid $122 Canadian for it with all taxes in, and they didn't charge any duty or GST when it arrived.

When I looked at the online manual, it didn't look like there was a way. I am shocked at how this feature that I have always taken for granted on any CD player is missing on so many DVD players (missing on my LiteOn too). The Cyberhomes (at least some) do random I believe.

1000 mp3s on a data DVD is a great concept until you have to listen to them in the same order time after time.....

  14. does it support playlists? you could create like 200 random playlists or something and then randomly choose one of those. not a great solution but definitely feasible. (playlists are also very small in file size)

  15. Hey everybody I"m having a problem with the Mpeg-4 feature, mainly Xvid(not DivX). The issue that I have is that some well most of my Xvids work on this dvd player until recently when I updated to the new Xvid (final) codec. and now when this dvd player tries to load it it starts for a second then stops and says "codec not supported". Why does this happen now and I've tried changing the 4CC to:

FourCC Description code: DIVX XVID XVID DX50
    FourCC Used Codec : DX50 DX50 XVID DX50
    (Nic's Mini AviC FourCC Changer)

Can someone please tell me a way to use the new Xvid codec on this DVD player

  17. After comparing the Philips w/ my Lite-on 2002, it's become obvious that the LVP642 is a much better Divx player. When I burn a bunch of files on DVD-/+R disc, the Lite-on has problems playing the end of the disc, but the Philips has prefect playback.

My experience was just the opposite. I had many DVD+R disks full of Divx, Xvid and MGP files that the Philips wouldn't play, whereas the Liteon played them all. The problem may have been that many of the DVDs were not finalized (I read about this later). I only had the player for a week so I can't go back and check.

But the real showstopper for me was that the Philips could not independently zoom the width and the height. Many of my files have odd aspect ratios and need to have the width or height adjusted on playback.

I just got it last night, you can press DISPLAY and then enter the time using numbers (0020-- would be Go to the 20 min) and press OK.

In their self-help they tell how to play subtitles with DivX, but I could not make it work. I'll try the latest upgrade tonite, any ideas?
Also, for DivX with AC3, I get some weird sound, like buzzing.
I can still hear the actual track behind the buzz, but it's very low.
    Any thoughts?

Have 3 of these to test (two for relatives) and some notes now:

UDF/ISO format discs are why some people complain about 'chirping'. This is the format needed for really long file names, and stick a disc like this in there and it takes forever to load up and does crazy seeking. Data or UDF alone and the same files on a different disc load in normal times. Just need to stay away from UDF/ISO for discs for this. It will eventually read them but takes forever and is a major workout for the drive.

Have some files that it won't play. AVIMux and GSpot give identical info to files that do play, haven't determined if it's the file or player 100% but looks like the player balks on some starts. Demuxed and remuxed with VDub, and still wouldn't play but did start once on that one. Chop a second off the beginning with VDub and rewrite and they play fine.

Overall I like it even with a few quirks etc, most things simply play. Once I get my divx capture/conversion setup up to par then all of my TV caps will be moved to Divx.

  24. During MY reasearch I've found that it can also play 3ivx files but none of my encoded xvid files but it can play xvid files encoded by another group of encoders. (It just pisses me off)

I've had a number of xvid files play like a pixelated mosaic with funky colors...I wonder if anyone else has noticed this.

I haven't tested a lot, but it seems to me that the problem xvid's display a "b-frame decoder lag" message when opened in VDubMod. I do not know if this is related to QPEL or not. I know that this player also doesn't play QPEL, and one time the dvd player actually gave me a text message to that effect (unfortunately, I know of no way to check for QPEL on the computer...)

By re-encoding in VDub, using "fast recompress" and xvid codec, the result plays just fine (and yes, I do have the latest xvid final). Unfortunately, I know nothing about xvid encoding, so i don't know how to set the parameters optimally.

If anyone can point to a good guide tailored to this kind of xvid-to-xvid re-encoding, that would be great.

  26. I've only had one file that (when seemingly properly encoded) wouldn't play. It was something I had re-encoded from MP42, which I've done a hundred times already. For whatever reason, this one file wouldn't play. Very weird.

But with XviD, I've had zero problems so far. But all of my re-encoding (and like 90% of my crap has been re-encoded for this stupid player) has been done with DivX 5.1.1. I don't know what my problem is, but I can't get XviD to work with VDub. The file sizes are WAY off. I tried to look around for an answer, but I didn't find anything. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Re-encoding everything with subtitles, encoded with MP42, high res, etc. is getting pretty old. I have to re-encode almost everything for this player. But I can live with all that. The one thing that really irritates me is that it won't read DTS from cd-r's. I wish I knew if any other players could do that, but no one ever talks about it. I also wish I knew if it would read the same DTS tracks from a DVD-R, but I don't have a writer. I'd buy a writer if I knew it would work...I want to use DTS.

    Alan,

I have encountered a problem similar to this, but your scenario seems a bit different from mine. My scenario is:

Using Ritek G04 media, when I burn in UDF mode I get the crazy chirping/seeking. It often doesn't read the disc at all and rejects it. If I keep feeding it the same disc, EVENTUALLY it's able to read it. I don't have this problem when I burn in ISO mode, but I haven't tried UDF/ISO.

However, when I burn in UDF mode to a DVD+RW disc, the player reads the disc just fine. I'm not sure if it's the G04 media, or if the DVP642 just has issues with -R media in general (it is a Philips player after all ).

  29. THIS THING DOESN'T DO DTS!! Doesn't that bother anyone? My $20 Apex does, but not my $70 642. Back to the store it goes. It *detects* DTS, and proceeds to throw a black screen up with the message "DTS Not Supported -- Use Menu Key To Choose Alternate Audio" or something. It seems like it was more effort to create a warning screen than simply flagging the DTS stream and passing it through would have been, but what do I know?
