  1. You do it with TyTool -there's a great thread in the extraction forum regarding it. JDiner wrote the software and updates it constantly. Basically, after the program is on your computer as a .ty file, you have tytool create a header file, which is comprised of just the I-frames. Then you load the header file into GOP Editor (included with TyTool), and generate a cut list of the sections you don't want. You save that cut list, then back in TyTool pick "multiplex file" and choose your recording. TyTool then outputs a finished .mpg file for your viewing or authoring pleasure. JDiner takes great pains in updating the program; the most recent additions fixed a problem where TyTool croaked when given a file that switched from mp2 audio to ac3 (on Showtime for example). TyTool rocks too!

And if that's not cool enough, you can run vserver on the Tivo and stream video right from the tivo to your PC using the program tivo-mplayer. Oh, and how can I forget, software is in development to pull up the Now Playing list on ANOTHER hacked Tivo in your house, so you can watch content from one box on another.... The possibilities are endless.
I have nothing profound to say, so I'll just mention some things I really like (in no particular order): Tivos, Audis, Isuzu Troopers, Canon camcorders, Macs.

I have the Hughes 35hr HDVR2 DirecTiVo I installed a 2nd drive. I purchased the TiVo Mounting Bracket with Hardware ($12.49) from 9th Tee http://www.9thtee.com/tivo-dt2.htm you can even purchase the PTVupgrade Universal TiVo Upgrade CD ($6.25) I downloaded it and went with the CD (Linux) boot disk option, I unhooked my (windows) hard drives from my pc and then followed the steps (Hinsdale) for preparing the new hard drive as well as the original hard. I did not make a backup; I know I should have so if I would have had any problems I could have restored it.

Its been over a year since I did the upgrade and never had a problem, If I recall I think I got the idea from a TechTV episode and the information was linked from their home page. But remember like everybody has said be sure and unhook your windows hard drive before hooking up the Tivo drive or it will mess it up.

  3. I have a panasonic dmr-hs2 and record some directv content to this for watching later from the hard drive in the hs2 or from a dvd-r.

    1) I keep reading about being able to active a "30 sec. skip" ability but have seen nothing regarding editing actual content. Is it possible to cut out commercials, trim beginning/ending of shows, etc.?

    2) I currently have a Panasonic E30 recorder. Can I record directly from the unit or will I need some sort of "descrambler"?

    3) I know the DirecTIVO units only record at one quality setting but are there units with greater capacity than 35 hours? This is all I have seen advertised. Is a hard drive upgrade the only option for more storage?

I've been to the TIVO forum but have not registered yet. If you guys think I would have better luck there, just let me know.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

  4. Can someone explain how to properly hook up the TiVo to the DVD recorder?

  5. I'm not familiar with how many sets of outputs the tivo unit has, but basically you can run a set of audio/video connectors from the output on the tivo to a input on the stand alone dvd recorder. If there is only one set of outputs for the tivo, you could hook those up inline ( instead of tivo to tv you could have tivo to dvd recorder to tv ).

  6. The DVD Recorder receives the output (S-Video/RCA connectors) from the television. The Tivo is then connected to the DVD Recorder input.

I have a Sony RDR-GX7, and that is the way that mine is setup.

  7. Thanks for the tips. My situation appears to be complicated because my TiVo box is integrated with the DirecTV box. I'm not sure if bbllc's setup will work. To complicate things, I'm an idiot. Any help would be appreciated. I have an expensive DVD recorder that I'm not able to use. Thanks again.

Okay, I have directv with tivo built in, a panasonic dvd recorder, an Aiwa tuner, and a tv with two sets of inputs.

    1. My tv signal comes into the house through the directv/tivo unit.
    2. One set of audio/video outs from the Directivo unit goes to one set of audio/video inputs on the back of the tv.
    3. the other set of audio/video outputs from the directivo goes to a set of inputs on the back of the panasonic dvd recorder.
    4. then I run audio/outputs from the dvd recorder to the other set of audio/video inputs on the back of the tv. I also run the digital audio out from the recorder to the digital audio in on my tuner.
    5. or you could feed the outputed signals from a few devices into a tuner or a switching box if you are limited as to the number of signal inputs your television has.

Sometimes you might need to try different setups for the best results. Hope this helps.
