I've seen a problem similar to mine on these boards, and have searched the internet feverishly, but all the solutions given don't seem to help me.
I recently bought a dvd burner from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-011&depa=0
it's 8x, dual format. I bought an enclosure and run a usb2.0 line from my (pcmci) DUB-C2 USB 2.0 cardbus adapter slot to the back of the burner. (it has dual female slots- the other runs to an ethernet adapter)
It has been working like a charm for a few weeks now, but a problem has arisen.
I am struggling to burn -R discs.
I have tried:
burning on the fly [works fine with +R]
ripping, and burning at 4x [fine with +R, fails with -R]
burning with TDK -R's - fails
burning with fujifilm -R's - fails
burning with TDK +R's - works fine
i typically use nero (6.3.0.9)- it had cooperated in full (-R, +R, on the fly, source from HD) when i first hooked it up, then gradually incurred problems. First nero gave me the SCSI command aborted at the lead in (1%) on -R discs- so i tried ripping an image with dvd decrypter- then burning the image onto a -R with dvd decrypter- and it worked one time- and now it gives the same 'scsi command' message.
When i burn- it never gets past 1%, when it says the SCSI command aborted in the 'status area'. i saved a log

-I do have a usb hub connected to the usb port (1.1) that came with my computer- and it has 4 devices connected- but only 1 (my mouse) uses the port at any given time. Not sure if the 'SCSI device' would get confused with multiple usb devices- i haven't tried unplugging all of those either.

i've continued to search for solutions.
one person had the same problem, and he was advised, "It is the nvidia drivers. Update the ide controller driver in the device manager. I bet your drives show up as scsi drivers now."
if my IDE controller is made by Intel- i go to intel and search for IDE controller - and look for drivers.
any help as to which one I should be looking for?

Hi Ben,
My friend and I are having exactly the same problem. I do not believe it is a software or hardware conflict, nor user error. I have seen people posting this problem on various sites around the world and on every occasion they have all had the Burner attached via USB2. This tends indicate it could be the USB2 connection.
That observation only occured to me last night ..so.. I have now installed the Burner in my tower and the reader in the external USB2 case. I have not been able to see if this theory is right, as I am out of blank media.
I'm not a tech, however, I think an ATAPI devise is in someway related to SCSI and this is possibly causing the problem. The 'SCSI command aborted' message with only 1k written on the lead-in, should ring some bells ... somewhere.
I'm really surprised no-one has been able to solve the problem because there are MANY others having the same problem.
After reading your post I have to ask one question and that is, why are you using DVD-R when DVD+R function OK.
After reading your post the next media I buy will be +R and if your tests are accurate, I expect them to function as they should. -
i'm using -R because i have some b+p's to fill.
I'm also using -R because i'm not the type who encounters a problem and just sidesteps it. I'd like to know why this happens, and how to fix it, because my burner can burn -R's, but something about the SCSI isn't right.
yeah it'd be easier to just burn +R, but i'd rather try to solve the problem.
One guy who registered here PM'd me and recommened a hotfix- which i installed- but it was unsuccessful-
I believe the issue is the windows USBSTOR.sys driver which is loaded when the enclosure is connected to the PC.
I stumbled upon a microsoft Q article which describes a problem using NT backup with an external USB2 tape device. I believe the issue here is the same related: The USBSTOR.sys driver causing an I\O error hence "scsi command aborted.
I havent had the error since applying this hotfix. I can email it if you want it.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817765
has anyone ever contacted microsoft about this?-Ben- -
I too would like to solve the problem as I would prefer my burner to be in the external case. I'm not sure having it installed in the tower is going to solve the problem and will not know until I get more media.
People are re-installing the OS, updating drivers and really going to a lot of trouble trying to get it right, but the problem still remains. I haven't gone to that type of trouble as I believe everything in my setup is 100% OK and the 'OS' is causing the problem.
If installing the Burner into the tower stops the coasters, I will leave it there and be better off financially as the coasters are getting to be an expensive excerise.
I have told my friend about your tests with + & - and he is going to try the +R's. He wants to keep his in the external USB2 case because he uses his in different locations. -
it sounds like a problem with your aspi layer. try forceaspi
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm -
sorry for posting in the wrong forum.
forceaspi did not work, but thanks for the suggestion.-Ben- -
Ben,
I really believe this issue is related to Windows. I think the common thread here is that the burning does not work via USB so its got to be something related to modules responsible for communication via USB.
Im suprised the fix I sent you didnt resolve it, but there could be other factors present (variables in our software setup, patch level)
What *.VXD files are on your system?
Conflicting VXD drivers could cause conention for the device.
Yamaha's website recommends applying the following patch when the nero scsi command aborted happens with their burners. I also have the following patch applied which updates a ton of USB related drivers so Its not a bad idea:

Hi fladtheimpaler,
I too would like to thank you for your suggestions which do relate to the problem. Your approach is not based on user or software error and is directed to a patch in the OS concerning the real issue (USB2).
You are the first person I have seen to take this approach.
I appreciate you taking time out in an effort to help Ben and myself. -

Until you resolve this within nero select the "simulate" checkbox instead of the write checkbox. This will emulate the burn process but the laser will not write anything to the media so at least you wont waste media while testing.
Ill be honest. Im out of ideas. I don't see anydriver conflicts and your USB drivers are now relatively up to date. Maybe when XP SP2 comes out that will help.
I would update to the latest version of nero but i doubt this will work. When I was having this issue i noticed i was able to burn with less of these errors if i did the following (this is hardly scientific):
Shut off the burner. Launch nero and select files you want to burn. Power on the burner and once its detected within nero then try to burn the files. -
just stumbled across this while doing a search:
clicking here should bring up the following:
SCSI/IDE Command aborted
If the error message SCSI/IDE Command aborted occurs:
Please check if there is a program accessing the burner. Please deactivate the option switch off the automatic to be deactivated for the drives. In particular if the error message only occurs actually during the burning process and not during the simulation.
Please check if the APM is active and if so, deactivate it.
Please check if background programs such as antivirus programs are active. Please close them down for the duration of the burning process.
If it is a case of a SCSI device, then please check the settings in the SCSI-BIOS . In particular Sync Negotiation should be set to yes .
If you use SCSI devices and a relatively large number of devices are connected to the SCSI-Bus, then you should please check if the SCSI-Bus may be overloaded and whether this can be solved by setting the maximum data transfer rate and by updating theWinASPI drivers.
If you are using an Adaptec SCSI hostadapter, the newest WinASPI drivers should be installed.
Please check if drivers of other CD burner programs should be loaded and if necessary deactivate these. (For example, if more than 78 minutes is to be burned, the above mentioned error message appears)-Ben- -
Ben
The problem is that this doc is geared for a burner hooked up to a SCSI Card. The SCSI command aborted error is misleading because the burner is hooked up via USB which is a completely different specification than SCSI.
Flad -
Hi Ben & Flad,
I do not have an anti-virus application installed and have turned off the internal Windows Burning process. I also have the latest ASPI installed, no SCSI devises, however I do have a Promise RAID 0 set-up. I do have DVD Decryptor and SVCD Easy installed but they do not activate on startup.
The PC is not connected to the Web, I use another computer for Web Browsing.
Ben, the above artical refers to a 'SCSI/IDE command error' and we are dealing with a 'SCSI command error'. I feel certain the problem is related to the USB2 external connection and believe the patch supplied by Flad is worth installing.
Since my Burner is now in the tower, I will pass that patch onto my friend and see if it overcomes the problem and as soon as I get more media, I will be able to confirm whether or not, I still have the problem.
As soon as I find out what APM is, If activated, I will de-activate it. -
hi, APM is advanced power management, its in the services section of startup/admin. tools. im having the same scsi command aborted error in Nero 6.3.1.6 with an external USB 2 DVD writer (DWU18A). i've installed the latest ASPI, even uninstalled it totally, and done everything that nero page suggests (laptops dont have APM i believe, and im on a Dell laptop). ive installed one of Fladtheimpaler's recommended updates and am doing the second one very soon, but have a feeling like other people that wont solve the problem. just for info, im using RecordNow Max 4.5 (by Stomp!) to burn dvds. its flawless so far, and you can test/record/verify on all media, -R and +RW have worked wonderfully. saying that i still want nero working since its a great program all in all and clearly made by developers who know what they are doing! i'll join in blaming microsoft/windows/USB2 for this issue, since i have no SCSi devices or raid controllers at all in the laptop!
-
Guys came across this maybe it will help.
In Device Manager go to the listing for USB Controllers and do a properties on each USB Root Hub. On the power management tab deselect the checkbox "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
worth a shot. -
Hi kyleduncan,
If you are not having any problems whatsoever with RecordNow Max, the problem 'absolutely and positively' lays within Nero, NOT the OS.
RecordNow Max is recognising the USB2 devise, whereby Nero must believe it is connecting to a SCSI devise. Nero sends SCSI code to the external devise and the devise doesn't respond with SCSI proticol, end result, SCSI command aborted. -
hey guys. it seems fladtheimpalers usbstor.sys driver update worked! only tried it once, but simulated a DVD-R in nero with high compatibility mode on and no scsi command aborted at the lead in spot. so that did it for me! thanks so much
kyle -
Simulation always worked, it only failed whevever you elected to write.
I bought media today DVD-R(AN31) which have been described by many on this site as only being fit for landfil. I used DVD Shrink and burned with DVD Decrypter and backed up the Godfather Series given to me for Christmas. With the burner now in the tower, the 4 backups burned without any problems at all, no coasters. There wasn't one skip, pixelation or any other problem from the beginning to the end. In fact, it's hard to tell the copies from the originals.
So much for bad media. I guess it's easy to find something to blame when things do not go as planned.
I have downloaded that patch to pass onto my friend who still needs to use his Burner in different locations, I hope it solves his problem. -
hey. no my Nero was failing on simulation and burn (useful cuz meant no coasters). and that was the case for several other people in differnt forums, including fladtheimpaler. so i think my problem is indeed solved. it sounds like this is a common nero error with MANY possible different solutions though, seeing as so many people are getting it and different fixes only work for certain people. will update if i get any problems when it comes to burning, but for now i dont want ANOTHER copy of gothika on DVD-R
)
-
i spoke too soon. i tried once more to burn a DVD-R and i got the SCSI command aborted error during simulation. DAMN! that makes the problem even weirder because it doesnt happen 100% of the time. i would say i get the error about 9 times out of 10 with nero, but its fine with every other burning application. so im still with those of you who havent found a solution!
-
I have now backed up 20 of my DVDs with the (AN31) blanks, no coasters or problems of any description.
I'm new to DVD and have found this site extremely helpful, my thanks to the administrators.
This is a summary of what I have learned in a relatively short period.
1. DO NOT place a DVD Burner in an external USB2 enclosure under any circumstances ..ie.. until this SCSI command abort error has been sorted, which could be a long wait.
2. I use DVD Shrink and re-author the DVD. I then use imgtool Classic to make an ISO image. I finish by burning the image with DVD Decrypter.
3. Completely forget about the hype connected with so called bad media, buy the cheapest you can find.
I am currently using the cheapest DVD-R media I could find, Laser (AN31), which according to many members of this forum are absolute *hit and haven't encountered a problem of any description using the above mentioned method. I learned of the above 'free' applications on this site and am 'over the moon' about the quality results I am getting. -
Hey, i agree about the cheap media issue, but i can use my DVD+-RW drive perfectly in my external USB2 case with every application except Nero. Decrypter and Record Now Max by Stomp work perfectly... i recommend those two. record now max only gives the option to burn data, but it recognises the video and audio_ts folders automatically and burns a compatible disc that plays in a several year old dvd player of mine, samsung.
-
Not sure if this is a related problem, but it the symptoms seem similar:
I'm using Sony DRU-530A with Sonic Record Now. Have successfully burned around 30-40 Fuji DVD -R's over the past month or so. No problems at all. The, all of a sudden in the middle of a burn I get an error message:
"There was a problem writing to the disk. You can try again by clicking retry. You will need another blank disk ready.
Sense:05 ASC:24 ASCQ:00 (command 2A)
PX.dll:1.6.14.508"
No idea what that bottom part means. Anyone have a clue?
It reads the disk and tells you that you've inserted a DVD-R with X amount of blank space. The burn prosess starts off fine. Then after about 2 or 3 minutes, I get the above message. If you put the disk back in, you can't play the files, but you can see that the data was being written (you can see the folders, some of the file and the disk name). Have already made a bunch of coasters trying to figure this out, but I've noticed the problem happens at almost the exact spot every time (about 3 minutes in).
I tried to burn a few different files. Same problem. Tried to burn to a DVD+R and +RW...both worked. As with Ben F, I don't want to just use DVD +R. I bought a multi-format burner (not to mention a 100 pack of DVD-R) and would like to use it as designed.
Sorry if I'm reapeating or if this is completely different problem, but it sounds similar. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks. -
Hi Kyle,
My friend tried burning DVD+R and still got the SCSI command error.
Nevertheless, it would seem you have arrived at the same conclusion regarding the problem .... NERO.
The FREE applications I am using now are very user friendly, really do give terrific results ..and.. no coasters.
When the SCSI command abort problem has been solved, I will return my burner to the external USB2 case, as I would also like to have the option of using it in other locations.
Sorry spiderico, I do not think your problem is related and I am unable to offer any advise ..ie.. other than, have a look at the applications I am using (mentioned earlier), it may help. -
Further to my last post, I have just purchased a spindle of Princo DVD-R 4x and have used 6 of them. All backups are absolutely perfect, I doubt anyone would be able to pick the backup when compared to the original. Princo blanks have also been described by many as s*it media. Since I placed the Burner into the tower NO coasters. It has also occurred to me that burning an ISO image is more reliable than VOB files.
-
I'm getting the same thing. Pioneer 107 in a USB2 enclosure. Upgraded to the latest Nero, tried it on my lap and desktop AND tried using the Gear Software burner and am getting the same problem pretty much. I've reverted to solving the problem in simulator mode since the world has enough coasters out there. It works fine when installed in my desktop, but I want to carry it with me when needed.
AUGH!
-D -
Well i only recently started having this problem and it seems alot of you are using USB 2.0 external drives. Mine is internal an LG DVD GMA4020-B.
Now I've had no problems for the past 12 months but just latley I started getting the SCSI command Aborted. this seemed to lock up the dvd drive and i would have to reboot. now the first port of call i made was to find out what i had changed or added in the last few days. I was having problems with creating audio CD's with nero and using MP3's due to the encoders not being installed correctly. I decided to upgrade to nero 6.3.1.6 and added all the updates and encoders i needed. this solved the problem with the audio cd's.
a few days later i tried to burn a dvd I used TMPGENC to make the MPEG file and TMPG DVD to make the dvd files as i have always done went to burn the disc and SCSI command Aborted.
I straight away went to fixing the problem checking the nero web site with not much luck. I ended up going into my device manager and updated the IDE ata\ATAPI controller this seemed to sort out the problem with the SCSI command aborted message and would burn a DVD from start to finish the only problem now is the dvds only play on my PC.
any more info you guys have would be great as i'm now at the point where i might wipe the PC and start fresh wich is gonna be a major pain in the ass -
Hello all,
I'm new and have the same problem. Nero, Roxio, and todays latest Recordnow give the same results. I can't do a copy of a DVD with any of them.
This is a USB 2 problem. My buddy has the same burner using firewire and no problems. He took the time to try it with USB tonight and same shit new day. His dual mode drive won't burn -R on USB, but works fine on firewire.
Guess my portable burner will have to go inside the box, and then it's not portable. Maybe I'll just do +R and walk away from this. Too many hours wasted and no answers. -
Hello,
I also have an USB 2.0 Enclosure and (with nero 6) I can't write DVD-Rs too.
-- DVD-RAMs works perfectly in windows explorer using the DVD-RAM driver included with the LG 4040B. The only advice to record DVD-RAMs is to disable CD recording (under properties) for that unit.
Well, back to DVD/CD-Rs....
-- I can't write DVD-Rs, CD-Rs, DVD-RWs and CD-RWs... but surprisely I can write Audio CD-Rs under XP with nero.
Under Linux I can write data CD-Rs. but there's no support for DVD-Rs... etc...
-- I think it's the scsi / aspi layer problem not getting data back from the DVD-R writers, it hangs and are not recognizable anymore until reboot win xp.
-- By the way, with my Pioneer DVR-104 the same problems happens with nero 6.
-- I'll try RecordNow Max too as suggested, I hope that it really recognize the ext. drives as USB devices.
-- thanks a lot for the posts!!!
I'm looking foward for any sugestion on using Nero with USB.
