  1. My Philips DVR880 started to abort recordings once again, this time out of warranty, so I've replaced it with a Panasonic E55, after reading all the reliability problems associated with Philips recorders.

After making an initial recording to a DVD-R by archiving one of my old US NTSC VHS tapes (I'm in in the UK). I then tried to add chapters to the recording. However, when I press 'Add chapter' on the remote I get a "cannot set" message. Adding/Editing chapters was a breeze on my Philips box, but I can't seem to figure this out. The manual glosses over the subject somewhat.

Also, how do I get rid of the overlay "DVD-R Play" from the screen when playing?

    Thanks.

  2. I have the DMRE50. As far as I know, when recording to DVD-R, you won't get chapters until you finalize the disc, then the E50 automatically sets the chapter marks for you. I don't know if the E55 is the same though.

Having re-read the manual for the zillionth time I think that you are quite right. My old Philips definately had a superior system when it came to adding/deleting/editing chapters. Pity it didn't keep going long enough for me to use them

    Many thanks for your input.

    best, TT

  4. You're welcome. On a different note, how does the recording and playback quality of the Panasonic compare to the Philips? I don't want to start another debate on the subject, but it'd be good to hear from someone who's used both machines. Thanks in advance!

Sorry I can't be of much help here. Unfortunately, my eyes aren't in the best condition these days. For this reason I can see little difference. Those with greater acuity may detect some differences. Good for them. My main concern is reliability, as I want to archive my large collection of old video tapes to DVD to save space, and regain some of our lounge.

Here's hoping that the E55 is up to a marathon effort!

    cheers, TT

  6. To add specific chapter markings where you would like as opposed to the 5 minute interval set at finalization on DVD-R discs, you'd have to upgrade to one of the Panny HDD based recorders. The only way to do this on the nonHDD based units is to use DVD-RAM media.
What exactly is rotten in Denmark?
