Digital video is supposed to be an improvement over analog. SVHS and Hi8 can display up to 420 lines vs 530 max for digital. Better resolution and more precise color information in short.

  3. You're comparing apples and pears. Current digital tecnologies, as proxyx99 mentioned, have higher resolution so they'll naturally give you better picture. So in DVD/DV vs VHS/8mm, yes, digital has better picture but only if the source had better quality than VHS/8mm to start with. But DVD/DV vs VHS/8mm does not equal Digital vs Analog.

Video is always analog. It's shot in analog (even if the camcorder is digital; it converts it internally) and you view it in analog. Digital is for storage so that the video doesn't degrade in quality over time and it's easier to manipulate.

Theoretically if you can put the analog video onto an analog media without loss of quality it will give you better picture than digital on the first play.

But not when using standard amateur formats (Hi8, SVHS). For a consumer market miniDV offers best quality (together with Digital8 which is as good as miniDV).
