  1. I've already decrypted and ripped my VOB to my hard drive.

But I only want to put a small section (approximately 5 minute section) onto a VCD. (It's actually one song from in a concert video.) I want to convert to MPEG first, then do some minor editing before I put it on VCD.

I've been trying with a trial version of Ulead DVD Movie Factory. I import the DVD video and only select one scene (which unfortunately is huge). Then I tried to do the Trim option but can't get anything to work. (Help files are not helpful here LOL)

What software do you recommend for converting a partial selection of a VOB to MPEG?

    Thanks in advance.

There's a couple of different ways that I know of:

    1. VirtualDub MPEG-2: Set your in and out points and save to an AVI. Edit the AVI in whatever program you want.

    2. Demux the VOB into elementary streams and your editing software should be able to load the M2V file.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Can you point me in some direction to discover what this means? Sorry, I'm a newbie.

OK. Lets just take a massive step backwards then...

I would recommend VOBEdit for this job. Once loaded, open your VOB using the Open button. click the Demux button. Tick the Demux complete title set box, the Demux all video streams box, and the Demux all audio streams box. Specify the filenames you want for the output and away she will go. This will give you a M2V file (the video component) and possibly one of a AC3, MPA or WAV file.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. I'll try that approach since I tried the first program (Virtual Dub), and it does not accept VOBs for an input.

    Thanks.

This is not VirtualDub...it is a strain that has been modified to accept VOB input. You must have used the normal one. Look here.

I hope you have better success with VOBEdit. However, Virtual Dub mod has always been able to load VOBs. Just make sure you have the "mod" version. For instance, this image is loaded into Virtual Dub mod, from a Matrix: Reloaded VOB (of course):

  8. If you decrypt with dvd decrypter you can rip the chapter in which the scene is taking place. For ex. if the scene is chapter 5, dvd decrypter will rip the chapter which will be much smaller than one whole vob. It will include audio. Hit the "Mode" button scroll and hit the "IFO" button and the
main parts of your video will show up. Unclick the chapter you do not want
and download to your file. You can then use whatever editing software you may use. I hope this helps.

I do this all the time. Open the VOB in Virtual Dub Mod, Find the part you want, enter start mark and finish mark, then save. Actually I frame serve to TMPGEnc and end up with a mpeg 2 file.

    Note, V-dub MOD........not V-bub.

  10. I'm playing with the MOD/MPEG Version now! Sorry, I had initially chosen the link to Virtual Dub that automatically hyperlinked in in jimmalenko--my bad!

Thanks everyone. You are extremely helpful.

I never thought of that. Thanks for the info. I'll use it in future.
