I tried copying a dat file from a VCD back to my hard drive using VCDGear ('dat --> mpg' option), and the new mpg is 110mb larger than the original mpg used to make the VCD... by original mpg, I mean I made the mpg, burned the VCD with NERO, then copied the .dat back to an mpg using VCDGear. What am I missing? I checked the strip mpg buffer/header/bumper (I can't remember the exact term right now) option in VCDGear.

The new mpg is the same length (according to WMP and VirtualDub) but its filesize is 110mb larger! I know there are header and footers for mpg's but 110mb worth?

No, I didn't let NERO re-encode the mpg when making the VCD; the whole process took about 10 minutes... to burn the VCD then convert/copy it back using VCDGear.

    Any ideas?

I told myself I'd never do this, but ^bump^

Any suggestions for my problem? Anyone?

  3. I have two suggestions
    1. in VCDGear make sure the check box 'Remove CDI bumper' is not selected. I sometimes get funny results if it is.
    2. don't use VCDGear. Nero will happily burn a DAT file. Just drag an drop it like an Mpeg and it will burn the VCD fine.

    cmacleo, thanks. I'll try #1 - I don't actually want to reburn them, so #2 doesn't apply

  5. Here is the smartest way to convert a VCD DAT file to a .m1v + mp2

    A. Copy the .dat file on your hard disk

    B. Rename it as .mpg

    C. Open TmpgEnc Mpeg tools

    D. Choose the Demultiplex option

    E. Load the .mpg file

    F. demultiplex it and forget about the padding file.

    G. Multiplex the file to .mpg

That's all folks. You will get a 100% .mpg file
