Hi, I received a letter in the mail about an infringement claim from my cable provider under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. Anyone know whats the best way to handle this situation? Thanks for your time.

Unless the letter stated that they were definitely going to proceed with legal action against you you're fine. Don't let it happen again though. You probably got popped for sharing movies and/or music with a peer to peer network. Make sure you set your sharing program to exclude any copyrighted works and it won't happen again.

Also if you upload files to your friendly newsgroup server and the file attachement has a movie name on it,that will attract attention.Just dont post or share files of that nature anymore.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
Or at the very least don't upload to your ISP's news server.

Exactly who did the letter come from? Your provider on it's own or your provider through the RIAA nazis? A friend of mine (friend is NOT another term for "me") once got a warning from his isp about infringement and all he had to do was delete the infringing files and give them a signed paper saying how he deleted the files (re-formatted C: drive.)
If it's from the Music Nazis, hopefully your isp plays hardball & protects your privacy. Otherwise go out & buy the offending media & claim fair-use.
I still think producing lousy music for over 10 years is the reason for the decline in sales NOT piracy. But that's another thread for another site.
You can always contact the EFF. -
Was it a cease and desist letter? Or a we are taking you to court letter? The first one just means don't do it again or your F'ed, the second.....
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they? -
Just ignore it.

I got a cease and desist order. Yeah, I said it! Columbia Pictures complained that I was sharing one of their movies. I kept sharing until I ultimately got rid of the cable modem. Damned bastards. If they want to sue me for thousands of dollars they can get in line.
