Hi anyone who cares to read this and thanks in advance to anyone who replies. I have got one of the Pioneer 5100H DVD recorders on order, the purpose of this posting is to get some tips and hints on the first things i should be doing with it, i have some blank discs turning up from Novatech and with the machine i have ordered a scart lead to get around the macrovision copy protection, should i set it up in a particular way? ie is it self tuning etc?? are the default settings ok to be left?? i think you get the idea, my main use will be for backing up home movies from vhs and for making backup copies of my old film collections.........thanks in advance, kind regards to all.....and remember a closed mouth gathers no feet !![/quote]

Well I can't guarantee to give you all the tips you are expecting. Firstly I must point out that using a SCART Lead will not get round the Macrovision Copy protection System on VHS - to do this you need to pass the output from the video through a box that negates the Macrovision - The use of a Scart Lead to get round the Macrovision copy protection is a myth and is totally untrue - So don't believe people who say it does get round it. Obviously not all tapes carry Macrovision on them so if this is the case then there shouldn't be a problem - The Main use for a Scart Lead is it gives better results in picture quality over RF and the fact it can be plugged into other appliances fairly easily. So if you can find a piece of hardware that goes between your video recorder and your DVD recorder to negate the Macrovision then I don't see a problem. I hope this sheds some light for you and at least you did get a reply (even though its not perfect news).
Settings wise the default settings should suffice and no tuning should be necessary if you are using a Scart Lead - Just need to make sure that you set the DVD recorder to record from the correct input method - ie whatever Auxillary Channel you are going to use (Normally RGB).
Obviously in an ideal world and to get the best results you should make copies of the films you want to backup from DVD's rather than VHS - firstly the quality is generally alot better plus you have the added option of including the extras (if any) from the DVD which is not likely to be present on VHS.

Setting up is child'splay you just Plug your aeriel into it and take a scart lead from it to your tv.
Im sure you would get a quick install guide with it.
I think all these things self tune nowadays.
It would be interesting to hear from you how using a scart lead will get around the macrovision copy protection .
Sounds like something a Comet salesman would say.
