  1. Info: Mac G4, OS10.2.8; A03 latest firmware.

I have a DVD+R disk recorded on a DVD Recorder.
    (Non-encrypted, non-commercial, family stuff).
I'd like to copy/clone it using my G4.
    I'd like to copy/clone it to a DVD-R disk.
(DVD recorder to DVD recorder is not an option, one recorder only).
I've tried dragging the disk image to the HD.
    I've tried DVDBackup.
I've tried the copy option in Toast 6.

It seems to work for a while each time, then locks up and stops.
Or seems to go on forever.

Has anyone ever cloned a DVD+R?
If you have, any advise will be most gratefully received.
    Many Thanks.
    Jay R.

    the +r mounts?

im amazed it does on an A03! which is a -r drive

you have to get access to a +/- drive for the disk to be read properly... which is why im wondering how you got an A03 to even mount the disk yet alone in 10.2.8!

  3. Not sure why it works, but it does.
Aren't the "-" and "+" format meant to be pretty similiar?
Maybe thats why it mounts. I really don't know.

Anyway; I just drop the disk in the drive and wait.
    The disk icon appears.
Open DVD Player, select the VIDEO_TS file and the disk plays.
    Its worked since 10.2.
It worked in 10.1, but it would only play the first 10 minutes of the disk.

Now the really odd thing is that in an earlier version of OSX; (not sure which); I could drag the DVD+R disk image onto the HD and then re-burn it on a DVD-R disk. I haven't done that for ages, and now it doesn't work, thus the question.

Anyway, I'm thinking I may need a "+" format drive to get it to work now. Can anyone confirm this?

  4. sorry; I read straight past:
"you have to get access to a +/- drive for the disk to be read properly..."

thanks, I'll see if I can borrow an external one and give it a go.

thoughts from anyone else on this topic is still welcome.

  5. Just a follow up.
On another thread a few solutions were suggested.
    Here's what happened to me:

    - Drag and dropped the DVD+R disk image in OS 9.2.2. (This did work for another user). I tried but the copy failed about half way through with a "disk cannot be read" message. I went back to OSX.

    - Use MacThe Ripper: Nice program. Tested with a DVD-R and it worked well. No success when using a DVD+R disk. Stops half way through.

    - Use Yade_X: Again, worked Ok with DVD-R but not with DVD+R.

    - Use DVDPlusTool: This program won't recognise a Superdrive.

    - Upgrade to 10.3.3. (Panther). I currently have OS10.2.8. Checked the price for this and its about $230 (Australian), so its not an option at present.

    - Use a "+" & "-" rated DVD drive. I'll have to ask around, but at present I don't know if anyone has an external drive that I can try. Maybe having a "+" rated drive will enable the DVD+R disk to be copied to the HD.

I've decided that as copying the DVD+R isn't urgent that I'll leave it for a while. I know new dual sided DVD-R and DVD+Rs are due out later in the year, which will probably mean new burners/writers and software to go with the new media. I'll wait till then to consider an upgrade.

Just two final questions if anyone knows:
Are DVD+R disks created on DVD Recorders different from those burnt in DVD+R burners?
Are DVD+R disks created in DVD Recorders of one brand name structured differently to DVD+R disks made in other brands?

Thanks to all for their assistance.

im almost inclined to say that the +r disk has a burn error/scratch etc

at least thats what it sounds like since all these apps are giving you the same result!

only way is to try another +r disk that you know is copyable!

  7. with my dvr-104 i was able to drag the video-ts folder out from a dvd+r, onto my hard drive, then burn it on dvd-r. however, here's the weird thing. the resulting dvd-r played fine on the computer, but the audio won't play on my set top box. the original dvd+r plays fine on both.
