  1. I have an ADVC-100 and Premiere Pro that I am using to capture old VHS Tapes. My understanding is that the ADVC-100 has a built in codec that converts the analog video signal to a digital avi file. The video quality of the digital file is determined by the canopus codec in the ADVC. Premiere captures the digital file and saves it a a type 2 avi file. So in fact the capture software should have no effect on the digital file other that the avi type. Now when I render or export avi with Premiere what codec is Premiere using? I have two choices, Microsoft avi or Microsoft DV avi. When I export to mpg I would guess it is using the main Concept codec.
From what I have read in the DVDrhelp forums, for which I am so thankfull for your help, the Microsoft codec's are not tht great. I did read that canopus has come out with a codec to be used in Premiere. Is this a codec I should use? I have not seen it on either web site so I am not sure if it is out yet. thanks Jim

Really it depends on what you want to do with the file.

If you want to export it back to your camera it needs to be DV AVI.

If you want to export it to DVD then use the Adobe Media encoder and select Mainconcept.

    Hope this helps.

That depends on your Export setting. I'm sure you're using DV NTSC, so in that regards, the next thing would be to check if your settings carry the Canopus codec. If it does, use it.

You should get the program avic to look at the codec. I get a codec of dvsd when I use premiere. CCE does not like this so I have the canopus codec installed and I use avic to change the fourcc from dvsc to cdvc and most programs like this better.

Actually, Premiere Pro uses the Main Concept DV Codec, it does not use the MS DV Codec. If you export the AVI to DV AVI, it will be Main Concept codec that is used.

    * Previous versions of Premiere use the MS DV Codec.

  7. Thanks for all the responses. I am a little confused as to why the main concept codec is call Microsoft DV AVI. Does anyone know where I could get the Canopus codec to compare it to the main concept one?
