HTML question...

I've just moved my website from V21 to a PAYG freeserve account (until I find one more stable, see other thread!), and Inoticed som eof my links contain the full V21 link, ie.

http://freepage.v21hosting.com/willhay/mysite/index.htm

Obviusly when I transferred all my pages over to freeserve had to change all the bloody links because they all pointed to my old website hosting.

What should I call them?

As you can see, they're all in a sub-directory folder called 'mysite', so should they simply be all like this:

http://mysite/index.htm

Will that mean that no matter where I host my website, my links and pictures etc. will always be pointing to the correct place?

This way no matter where you host your website as long as those pages are in a folder called mysite you'll be set.

Just a quick note, the arrangment of the files will have to be like this for the code I showed you to work.




Now if ALL the files are in the same folder, simply like to them by their filename such as:

That only works for files or folders contained within that folder for source files, not sure about links but there probably the same. You need to add ../ in front of the url to point the browser to go backwards. For example if you have a html file in mysite/example1/example1.html and you want to pull a image out of mysite/eaxmple2/image.jpg the url has to read ../example2/image.jpg. Add ../ for each folder you need to go back

To avoid all this you can just add the base tag http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_base.asp If you move your pages all you'll need to change is the base tag. Find and replace works great for something like this. Yopu can use all relative url's without the ../ and change it instantly.
