trying to convert an avi - dvd using tmpgenc plus

    avi details:

    runtime 1.02.17
    audio: 160kb/s 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
    video: 23.97fps xvid bitrate 1396kb/s

it gets to about 67% then stops responding, i have checked the file with divxrepair, with no bad frames found

    any ideas?

im using tmpgenc plus, with following settings:
    23.97fps
    interlaced
4740 bitrate (cos i wanna fit another 700mb file onto the dvd)
    ntsc template
    constant bitrate

  2. Frameserve from vdub ?

  4. If it keeps happeneing at the same % chances are its a bad avi. Try a different method of fixing bad frames, divxrepair (or any other app for that matter) may not spot every type of bad frame.

  6. In that case try VCDHunter's suggestion, frameserving. There are guides on how to do it over there <===== and it's not difficult. Often it fixes these types of issues.

I have occasionally had an AVI that keeps crashing out TMPGenc PLus , I did all the usual , checked for bad frames etc, didn't know what it was. For some reason instead of using the normal DVD Template in TMPG I used the DVD(Low Resolution) template and the same file went right through to the end no problem.

Just one more option to try that I can think of - I know its not quite as good quality but what about try converting to VCD . Then when you author with TDA it will convert the sound to 48k for you. At least mpeg1 conversion is quicker than mpeg2 so not too much time lost trying . Other than that I can't think of anything.

  13. You can try uncompressing the file with VirtualDubMod at the highest cpu thread priority.

  15. Open your problematic video into VirtualDubMod. Go to File : Save As. Now, you have to do this quickly. As soon as you see it starting to uncompress the file, go to the drop-down CPU Thread Priority and select Highest. IT WILL TAKE FOREVER. Also, remember that it will be doing about 1000 MB PER MINUTE OF VIDEO. You will need a lot of HD space. If you don't have sufficient space for the entire video, you can do it in segments. This is a pain, and, unfortunately, I can't guarantee anything, but, if you've tried everything else, then give it a shot. I have a Divx file that won't work any other way. VirtualDub only states 61 bad frames, but TMPGEnc has problems decoding (or encoding) a lot more. It seems to always happen at the same exact places. Now, you have to do it at the highest cpu thread priority. When I tried even compressing at normal priority, it would crash at the same places as when I left it Divx. It was only after I made it highest priority that it did not crash at the same place. I've only tried a small sample though, so let me know of your results.

  16. One more thing, before you try my tedious method, get VirtualDubMod to produce a .wav file from your video by going to File & selecting Save WAV. Before you frameserve, go to Audio & select WAV Audio and select the .wav you just had it produce. This should prevent that error, but it might not prevent your 67% error.

  17. Split the audio and video using Virtualdub before you encode and see if this helps. I've had success with this with some "problem" avi's.

    update:

ok i tried the method and had same results but it was worth a shot, it happens pretty often, i think i mentioned before or maybe not, it happens even more with files i have joined together using avi/mpeg/asf joiner (software)

i try to join using vdub, but often get errors, or something comes up saying i cant join cos second file contains diff info from the first, when i scan with gspot both files are the same bitrate (audio and video) so i cant see whats differant at all and why vdub wont join the files? it often mentions audio bitrate being differant for both files, that seems to be the main one, im crashing at random points now, files seem to go through a bit better if i defrag my hard drive before encoding, but for larger files (1gb+) it does about half the file then crashes.....i was wondering, can the spec of your machine have anything to do with this? maybe its a memory issue? i only have 256mb ddr memory on this machine (for now as im building my own and will have 1gb pc3200 soon) can my low memory be the problem here? or my video card? (geforce 4 mx420) maybe even my cpu? (athlon xp 1800) the spec of the pc ive nearly finished building is in my pc info maybe things might work differantly then.
