  1. ok, can anyone solve this problem:

when writing data-dvds my writer (pioneer dvd-106d) works fine, but when it comes to writing a video dvd it takes forever to write it.....somewhere during the writing process it will simply stop doing anything. this could last up to an hour and then it might start writing again. I havent a clue whats wrong.

    Rud,

If you want the "gurus" around here to help you, then you are going to have to give them more info. Like waht burning software you are using and version #. What make and model and other info about your DVD disk. I say this becuase I am just a wanna be and not a guru

I can tell you that I recently had a problem with Nero not burning to my new Pioneer 106D. I was about to kick my computer in the @$$ (or something like that), when I checked for an update to Nero. Low and behold the version of Nero I was using 559-series was not compatible with the new Pioneers. I had to DL the 5510series (551026 I believe) update and all is well again in DVWannaB land

Video dvds ARE data-dvds (the DVD-video standard is a subset of the DVD-ROM
standard). So, this can't be a hardware problem.

It's probably a software issue. I suppose you don't use the same software for burning
both data-dvds and video dvds.... if so try creating an .iso image with the software you
use to create a video dvd instead of burning it directly ... and burn the .iso file with the
software you usually use to burn a data dvd. It should work.

Upgrading the software you use to burn video dvds might also solve the problem.

  4. i usually use dvd decrypter to write an *.iso and copytodvd to write the bare video files. I have the problem on both sets of software, it also happens with nero.

it works fine when im just writing normal files to a disc, ie backing up music etc but when it comes to writing vobs etc thats when i get the problem. maybe its the media, im using datawrites 4x yellows but thought they were good.

I really don't understand. I also have a Pioneer 106 DVDwriter and I also use the latest version of dvddecrypter intensively to write DVDs (and I've tried any kind of disk DVD-R, -RW, +R and +RW). I've never had any problem with it. I know that dvddecrypter + a pioneer 106D is a combination that works well.

Moreover, I can't understand why you would be able to add a
few files to a disk without being able to write the .iso image of
    a whole disk.

It does not look like a bad media problem to me. With bad media, you usually either get a write error while burning or get a read error/pixelizations while reading ... but the writing processing
    never "hangs" for an hour.

Perhaps it's an hardware problem after all. Is the writer alone on
    its IDE bus ?

not sure what your getting at with:

then it kind of puts the search more towards a hardware fault on your system.
id bet it might be your IDE's are set to PIO and not DMA,or Ultra DMA.
also the last comment on your post--i think hes meaning that if you can write a few files on a dvd-r ok,whats the problem/difference with writing an ISO.

also i have to laugh at your comment bout datawrite yellow classic, being "good".
they have to be amongst the worst on the market.
you can pick up 25 of them for like £7 here in the UK.
    there just princo discs,same as bulkpaq(all colors,and tango),princo unbranded,etc,discplanet,choice,etc..
    rubbish.
try a decent media, and see if that sorts out the problems.
    and update your IDE drivers.
i use the VIA drivers,my mobo has a VIA chipset.
i know of a friend who had similar problems and was using generic IDE drivers for his pc,problems writing, and also in device manager he had his IDE set to PIO mode.
whereas after a driver install and a reboot,it picked up on "Ultra DMA Mode 6".
a considerable speed increase and no more problems burning.

  8. * my ide's are set to ultra dma mode 2.
    * which media do you suggest?
    * i too have a via chipset, i should have the latest 4 in 1s in
