What are the differences between the "Temp" and "Temporary Internet Files" folders?

I realize that the "Temporary Internet Files" folder contains cookies for the pages that I recently visited. These cookies are to help me open the visited pages faster and they can and should be deleted periodically to save space on my hard drive.

What is the "Temp" folder for? I looked into this folder and saw a lot of little files. I recognize some of them and do not recognize many of them. A few examples of the files I recognize are .jpg and .wma files of the pages I visited in the past. How come they are not stored in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder. They can be deleted, I am sure.

However, for the files I don't recognize, what are they? An example of them is the sub-folder called "_istmp0.dir" which contains an .exe file "dxsetup.exe". What in the world are all of these folders/files?

  2. Dxsetup is directX setup.

Temp is used for temporary files created during program installation and temporary files created by programs in use.

Temporary Internet Files is just for, well, temporary internet files.

That's how I understand it. Anyone that feels free to further elaborate is more than welcome
