So I will be going to Iraq May 13th with my Marine unit. I have all my movies backed up and I did it with DVD Shrink Region “1” – I am going to buy a laptop to bring with me so I can watch them and I will also be getting a converter for the electricity outlet. Will my backup movies still play? Or is the Region for the size of the TV or what? Thanks -

If you are viewing them on your laptop it makes no difference where you are in the world. If you try to play these through tv-out on your laptop than region coding is irrellevant, but regional formatting could be an issue. I don't know for sure but my guess is that Iraq uses PAL and if you are in the states than your movies will be NTSC. So if you play the DVDs through tv-out the tv will have to support PAL 60Hz (modified version of NTSC.) Generally this isn't a problem.
If you try to play your DVDs in a hardware player over there then it won't work unless its a region free player. Maybe in the future you should just make your DVDs region free.
Good luck over there and stay safe. -
Hello!
Iraq is SECAM. (http://www.vidpro.org/standards.htm)
As adam said, outputting the signal is where you might run into problems. And even then, the rest of the world seems to have a lot more access to multi-system TVs than we do.
That's been my experience. -
Thanks - I will just leave them at Region 1 then -
Say I make another copy from the "backup"(not the original) that is Region "1" - Can I change the region again if I use DVDShrink so it will play in Iraq's SECAM Region. In case my labtop goes out and there is an actual TV and DVD player. Is SECAM Region 2, 3 , 4 , 5 or 6?
Thanks so much!! -
Iraq is Region 2. That I can tell you.
As for changing/removing regions? That I can't. -
If the discs are backups, they will play regardless of region.
You can't store region information on a dvd-r, so they are essentially all region.
Pop one of your backups in dvd decrypter and see for yourself. -
I don't think that's true. Region coding is just set in the IFO. A backup can still contain region coding. If it couldn't why would every ripper and transcoder offer the ability to remove/alter it? I know of many people who have made the mistake of locking themselves out of their backup by accidentally setting it to the wrong region.
And of course even with a region free disk or player you still have to worry about regional formatting, ie PAL won't play on standard NTSC hardware. -

For Iraq, all you need to know is two things:
* SECAM
* Region 2
And for God sakes, please be careful over there. -
First, you will be in the military base which is equipped with NTSC. Second, you won't be watching Iraqi TV most likely so forget local system. Third, your base will have more the likely their own DVD library and SAT TV. Fourth, DVDShrink would be the last thing on my mind if I were in your shoes.
