Here's the deal. We have 3 computers but one is 6 years old and the other two are new. The Dell that we just got obviously already has XP home edition on it but they also give you the Windows XP OS disk when you purchase their systems in case you have to reinstall the OS. The old computer is a POS Compaq that I would like to upgrade so it can just be used for web browsing downstairs. However, it has Windows 98 on it and I wanted to know if I can use the XP disk that came with the Dell to upgrade the Compaq's OS. Will it let me or will it just say no and what happens to the HDD on the Compaq since it has a partition on it with the 98 OS and all of the drivers and such. Not sure what to do really but I like XP better than 98.
    Thanks for any info.

  2. NO! the compaq disk will check its being installed on a compaq PC. Also what you propose is unethical. 98 will browse the web fine.

Unethical...maybe but if you think 98 would do just fine for surfing the web then that's what we'll stay I suppose.
