  1. Need Help: I have a DVD disc (non video) with 7.4 gigs on it and would very much like to shrink it so I can burn it to another DVD (4.5 gigs). Is this possible, and if so how do I go about doing it! TIA

If it is "non-video" than what is it?

Assuming that it is not one 7.4 gig file, you could just take half the files and burn to 1 disk and the other half to a second disk.

    As I missing something here?

You could compress the data from the 7.4gb disc to 4.4gb using .zip or .sit files ... but I am almost certain that if the files needed a commercial dual layer disc to contain its data, chances are it won't be able to be compressed to nearly 50% of its original size. Consider breaking up the data into two DVD-Rs as suggested above.

It's impossibly to "shrink" non-video DVDs, and have them work like the original. Shrinking only works by removing data from MPEG2 video strams, reducing the quality. It's not some magical 'make it smaller' button. Your only options would be to split the data onto two DVD-R discs, or wait until dual-layered burners are available.

I saw you created a second topic about this. Why?

Before theres too much more speculation, tell us what disc you are trying to split (did you buy it? did a friend give it to you?) and what is on this disc?

I'd love to speculate, but it could get ugly... I vote for two thread locks here, and maybe a warning. Actually, I'm just hoping it was an April fool's joke by someone who really knows better.

One could proably extract the indiviual programs off a DVD (that they already own) that has multiple apps using particular software depending on what the dvd was. (sorry I just liked that emoticon so I just used it nothing to do with the topic)
