  2. Hi...

The NeuNeo,player is not a good player. It's a low quality unit that will never come to much and the NeoDigits folks deliver some of the units with chips that are NOT divx certified. Here is a link to my experience with it:http://forums.eyo.com.au/showthread.php?t=45125

  3. aquahallick,

Just to provide a bit of balance to speed's review, I'll offer my impressions. I've had my NeuNeo for a week and a half now and I've had the opportunity to compare it with the Philips DVP642. I really like the NeuNeo, and I'll probably return the Philips.

The player arrived quickly from China to the US in less than a week via DHL, and was packed well enough that the player was not damaged during delivery. I must say that the folks at NeuNeo are VERY customer-service oriented. They are friendly, helpful, and answered all emailed questions I asked them within a few hours. Top notch service, especially when compared to Philip's tech support which was like visiting a rest home for cranky, intellectually challenged spider monkeys. And that comparison is probably unfair to the poor spider monkeys.

My player has the MTK1389EE chipset, which is DivX certified. There has not been a single avi file I have tried that has failed to play correctly so far - DivX, XVID, mp3 sound, ac3 sound, you name it. WMV files don't play, but this player will play WMA audio, which the Philips cannot. This player cannot play DivX subtitles, but neither can the Philips. Unlike Philips, my contact at NeuNeo knew what I was talking about and told me he was pressing MTK for new firmware (at least one other 1389 based player has beta firmware to allow subs) which should be available soon.

Image quality for MPEG4 files was very good, at least equal to the Philips, and DVD playback is superior to the Philips. The NeuNeo also allows you to fast forward/backward up to 32x in *any* video file, raw or authored. The Philips is limited to 8x scanning in any file (how dumb!) and refused to scan raw mpeg files. The NeuNeo can zoom both in *and* out up to 4x, which was a big deal to me because I like to watch fansubbed anime, and unless I can zoom out a bit, I can't see the subtitles on my tv due to overscan. The Philips couldn't do this, so it forced me to re-encode my files with a "letterbox" around the image to make up for the overscan.

Setup menus and the file browser are much better and more intuitive on the NeuNeo than the Philips. The NeuNeo can display long file names, which the Philips cannot. The Neuneo will allow you to jump to any file immediately without having to page through all the files on a disc, which the Philips doesn't do. The one thing here the Philips can do that the NeuNeo can't is automatically skip to the file in the next folder when you press the "Next chapter" button on the remote. The files seem to have to be in the same folder for this functionality to work properly in the Neuneo.
Region free out of the box - no muss or fuss. Also has 5.1 analog audio, which the Philips desn't have, if that's important to you. Also can play HDCD and karaoke, if you feel the need to punish your friends with your singing.

Don't get me wrong, the NeuNeo does have it's issues. The loading tray is very flimsy, and I can see it breaking off if you aren't careful. The manual is not terribly informative and doesn't give details on a lot of the neat features of this player. I had to discover a lot by trial and error. The "zoom" icon does not disappear while you are zoomed - annoying, but bearable. This is a known bug with the mtk1389 based players, and will be fixed in the next firmware. The remote is terrible. The sensor seems to be set too far in the remote's plastic body, so if you don't hold the remote in just the right position, the commands don't get sent to the DVD player. Extremely aggravating. I resolved this issue by programming a learning remote control with the NeuNeo's commands, and now everything works great. I think the complaints about the build quality are not entirely unjustified, but I think on the whole they're a bit overblown. I didn't find the Philips to have exceptional build quality, though its remote and loading tray were better than the Neuneo.

On the whole, I've been very happy with my purchase, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone who wants a good MPEG4 standalone.
