install powerdvd or windvd -- you need a mpeg2 codec

windows media player 9 will play dvds so it must have the codec.
in fact i just downloaded
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx
which includes the following codecs
Windows Media Audio 9
Windows Media Screen 9
Windows Media Audio 9 Voice
Windows Media Video 7, 8, 9
MS MPEG 4 v3
MS MPEG v1, v3
ISO MPEG 4 v1, v1.1
any other ideas perhaps?
and why wouldnt neroshowtime play its own??? -
Exactly what kind of file are you playing? I don't think you specified. Also, in the list of codecs that you mentioned above, none of them are mpeg-2 filters. If WMP is playing DVD's it's probably because you have some other software DVD player, unless it's using Nero's DVD decoder. My point is that WMP doesn't come with a DVD decoder.

hi
i reinstalled nero latest version and everything worked including the mediaplayer weird.
heres a follow up.. i have the same file i used nero recode and the pocketpc profile put in on an SD chip for playback in my pocket pc (windows 2003) no dice.. do i downloaded and installed pocket divx. both should play mpeg4 yet neither do. any insight as to playing back on pocket pc files recoded using nero recoder??? -
Nero Recode mp4 files aren't Divx. They use Nero's proprietary mpeg-4 video compressor. To my knowledge they can't be played on pocket pc's. The only thing I can think of that might play them for you is maybe a pocket pc version of Quicktime, but I don't even know if such a version exists. You'll have to look into that one yourself. A quick google search didn't turn up much for me. Instead of using Nero Recode you should consider converting your DVD's to Divx using the "Portable" or "Handheld" profile.
