  1. I want to back up a dvd-9 disc to dvd-5. I was wondering which program would be the best to compress the whole disc. I read the article about dvd copy being the best but then heard bad words about. I was wondering what is actually the best dvd copy software, (instant copy 8, dvd copy 2 and dvd shrink etc).

Many people here prefer DVD Shrink. Give it a try, unless you would rather pay money for any of the other programs you mentioned.

Opinions are split but InstantCopy 7/8 does an excellent job for me (no difference from the original on a 32 inch TV). Easy to use and very precise transcoding. I tried it once and that ended my search. I believe demo is available for download.

Instant copy has one problem...it almost always undersizes the final product. Hell, I´ve seen it undersize to 2.9gigs when aiming for 4.38GB

In fact, I´ve never succeeded in getting an image above 4.2gigs

  6. If you want to compress the whole disc, I wouldn't suggest transcoding. I don't like the results. Try these guides out. They are almost identical but there are a couple of little differences. This is how I do full disc backups.
