  1. has anyone ever tried running other programs while TMPGEnc Plus converts files........

i am so sick of 5 hour conversions and being afraid to run other programs because they might screw up the conversion process in some way.

    any ideas? thanx !

Multi-tasking will not "screw up" your TMPGEnc encoding operation. It will slow it down though. Many of the TMPGEnc users here do their encoding overnight, rather than stare at a progress meter for 5 hours.

Doing light stuff like surfing is not a problem, for more intensive stuff you might want to adjust the task priority under the "options" tab. Adjust it lower to give more CPU time to other programs.

  4. Tmpgenc defaults to ow priority if you using XP or 2000. If your machine is at all good, you wont have prblems running stuff. Least of your concerns is the encode screweing up because of runing things. To be Uber safe, do anything xcept #d gaming and you'll be fine.

  5. i agree with the others. it wont screw up the encoding process but it will slow it down. just do all of your encoding when you go to bed and it will be ready for you when you get up.

Yep, everyone's got it exactly right. The only effect running other stuff will have is to slow down the encoding process.

I use Win XP Pro. And I run Seti command line client 24x7. But it runs at lowest priority, so I can do other stuff at the same time (including fairly CPU intensive games and stuff) and it'll just sit there in the background and use whatever CPU time is going spare. No problems.

But the first time I started encoding with TMPGEnc, I found that no matter what I did (i.e. setting the Process Priority in TMPGEnc), TMPGEnc would eventually revert to lowest priority too. So, instead of TMPGEnc taking priority over Seti, the two tasks would end up competing for the CPU and only get 50% each.

So now I have to shut my Seti task down, whilst I encode so that TMPGEnc gets all the CPU it needs to be able to complete in the shortest possible time.

But TMPGEnc still doesn't stop me from using the computer for doing other stuff at the same time, unless it's intensive stuff like running games.

It's only a minor inconvience (i.e. having to stop Seti and restart it afterwards), but I can live with it.

    Ian.
