So far, I have been fairly well satisfied with Memorex DVD-R disks, but, . . . lurking & reading tells me most prefer the Ritek G04 blank DVD-R here. I did a Google and found several different ones: there's a shiny silver surface, white inkjet printable [I assume they are talking about the label], there is a matt finish, ................
My question: does it make a difference? I'm gonna spend a hundred bucks and don't want to get the wrong stack if one or the other is better.
Thanks & may God bless,
Dwight

There has been quite a bit of discussion and controversy concerning the G04 discs and which ones are Grade A. The link below seems to me to be the most comprehensive and current, especially as the quality seems to be changing so old information may be misleading. It seems that the branded silver Ridata are safe but discontinued. Given the good past reputation and the possibility of change in the future I grabbed a bunch of the silver yesterday. It does appear as though stock is getting low.
FYI I happened to get a batch of Orange discs mentioned in the article but my batch is flawless. Also note that this link refers to UK.

My personel G04 -r fav is the video reel disc
burnt well over 150+ lately and not 1 coaster.

I prefer the shiney, silver top unmarked. I just received a new spindle, I ordered the silver top but received the white frosted top branded with Ridata in the middle circle.
I immediately called and the guy assured me that they were the same disc. I'm not too sure about that since the silver tops were $64 for a 50 spindle and these were $43 for a 50 spindle.
I've burned a few and no problems but my jury is still out.... -
Another site mentioned a call to Ritek that confirmed that the two disks you are concerned about are the same. He also mentioned Ritek was planning to stop making the shiny silver as it was too easy for sellers to sell off brand discs as Ritek. I have seen this in two other posts as well.

Right now i prefer the shiny silver tops. The first spindle of ritek's i ever used were labeled as y's power and they were really good. The 2nd spindle i ordered were the dull silver matted tops and i had trouble with those... kept hanging up my burner before it would start to write (an lg-4040b).. i managed to get through that spindle by writing them at 2x. I'm still thinking i just got unlucky and got a bad batch. The place I ordered them from (rima.com) gave me a partial refund and some free samples of another batch that worked fine. I opted not to send them back because i didn't want to get assraped by UPS customs brokers a 2nd time.
3rd time i ordered the shiny silver topped ones from blankmedia.ca. And they've been great!
I've heard of other people getting the odd bad batch regardless of label. So i think maybe Ritek's Quality Control Division is a little lacking as of late.
