Hello all,
I have been trying to back up some DVDs, and have had no problems with most of them but I can't rip some of them (using DVDShrink, DVDDecrypter or SmartRipper!!). These discs play fine on my standalone DVD player but then when I try to play them on my PC using POWERDVD, I get a message saying that the disc may have been intentionally damaged to prevent playback.
Any (and all) suggestions welcome.![]()

disc may have been intentionally damaged to prevent playback
This is a generic error message issued by PowerDVD if it cannot
access a drive or dvd. The cause could be anything from marginal
media to errors with your DVD rom drive. Most likely, though, is
that your PC dvd rom drive just does not like the kind of media
or the way you are burning it. Change burning methods or change
DVD media. Also check if new firmware can be flashed to your PC
DVD rom drive - this also may help.
Without details I cannot suggest anything else. -
Thanks for the reply, will try the firmware thing, but the error is actually coming up on the 'original' disc that I am trying to rip not the 'backup' that I burned as I do not get as far as burning.
It just seemed odd that the discs play no problem on the DVD player yet I cannot manage to back them up, this is the first time I have come across this problem and it happens on 3 or 4 discs that I have.
Will let you know how I get on with the firmware thing!
Thanks again -
Update:
I have tried to read the disc on a different drive (NEC1300) Firmware 1.08 but this drive does not see the disc at all. The other drive (MT1316) sees the disc but I cannot rip it using either DVDShrink, SmartRipper or DVDecrypter.
The discs are films brought over from Vietnam, and while I have had no problems with other discs that also came from there, there are 3 or 4 that I am having this problem with.
ALL SUGGESTIONS WELCOMED!!
