i hope so, and i hope you might be able to give me a little advice.
i was converting an old family movie from vhs to dvd+rw today and decided to edit it together on my pc, i used dvd-decrypter no problem but when i check the video the quality always drops and it's quite noticible especially when something moves fast. i don't know why this happens. i figured it might be because i was using +rw disks, so i tried a +r disk and finalised it then tried - same results.
i decided to use an old method that i did with my fathers dvd-recorder - i plugged my mini-dv cam into the rca out socket and recorded straight onto dv, then grabbed it vis usb - this worked much better so i know that the problem is not the original vhs or recording to dvd because from dvd-dv is great. but that's not the only problem, when recording onto mini dv my camera seems to pick up some light background noise) other channels perhaps) which becomes very noticable and since some of my movies are concert based causes real problems - the only solution i have found is to grab just the audio from the dvd then grab the video from my camera and put them together - which takes ages, but at least works.
i've tried a lot of media and the results are the same so i guess what i'm asking in a nutshell is:
a) has anyone found the quality go down a lot when using the +rw disks in their pcs?
and
b) has anyone else noticed other audio underneath what they are recording when using the rca out on the back of the machine?
i hope that makes sense.

My guess is that your editing software is re-encoding the video and thus degrading picture quality. Make sure your editing software is set to not convert compliant MPG files, if this feature is available.

thats a good point but i dont know how to only grab parts of my video off the disk apart from re-rencoding using tmpgenc - how do you grab certainbits - any software advice?
thanks for replying too - would love it if someone knew why i was having audio problems with the rear rca outputs too.
