OK, I have an avi file Ive extracted the audio using nandub to a wav format. Now, how do I convert it to Dolby Digital 5.1. Basically I have regular audio and want to turn it into surround. I have used BeSweet but it will only make it 2 channels even when I change the settings to create 5.1 channels, I want 5.1 to make it true surround, any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't get true surround from 2 channels. It can't be done. You can try to modify the exsisting sound using an audio editing program such as Audition or Cubase and adding reverb or delay then saving the modified files and use those as your surround channels but it will never be true surround.

Correct. Unless you have a 5.1 AC3 or DTS source, you aren't going to be able to create a true surround mix.
Is it a waste of time? well that's a personal opinion. I've heard several people who had the time and patience to play with a stereo mix and create an artificle surround that suites their needs but it will never be true surround. -
if the sound you have is encoded in dolby surround (not the same as dolby digital) which it will be if it came from 5.1 downmixed to stereo (i.e. a dvd rip) then a dolby pro logic amplifier can recreate some surround effects. your dolby digital amp should have a dolby pro logic, or even pro logic II mode.

I saw an audio program that you can create true 5.1 surround sound....I dont remember the software off hand, but unfortunately its very expensive when I read more about it (about $2,000) and from what I read you can do the DTS and 5.1 encoding.
VTMI have the staff of power, now it's up to me to use it to its full potential to command my life and be successful. -
well that's great, but you'd still need a 5.1 source not a two channel source, if you wanted a 5.1 output.

If I have multiple sources and want to generate a surround setup, are there any demo (or better, freeware) programs that can take multiple inputs and generate the AC3 file?
For example:
separate dialog (center), stereo music (left & right), assorted sound effects (virtual positioning?).
I have seen that Studio 9 can do something like this, where the GUI allows you to place the virtual position of the sound source. I don't want studio, so I am looking for alternatives.
Any ideas?

more important than anything else, is to undestand that there is no way to create what you want, with a simple software.
Keep in mind that you have to create your sound, cause only you know what you want in every channel.
An ordinary way to do it, but works for me. Is to create 6 MONO tracks in Vegas Video.
Setup 2 tracks ( 1 Right - 1 left ) , this will be your rear channels
Setup 2 tracks ( 1 Right - 1 left ) , this will be your front channels
Setup 1 track ( Mono ) this will be center
Setup 1 track ( Mono ) this will be LFE
--------
Now, don't worry about a real 5.1 decoder card with real 5.1 speakers.
You can do this with a simple pair of speakers. Yeah, it's easy.
Not a professional way to do it, but this method wakes up creativity.
--------
Now it's time to edit. ( Just put the sounds that you want in the channels that you want )
- Center ( try to use your knowledge in EQ to enhance voices in this channels )
- Front Right ( creativity )
- Front Left ( creativity )
- Rear Right ( a little bit of ambience with no voices at all + extra sounds )
- Rear Left ( a little bit of ambience with no voices at all + extra sounds )
- LFE ( use cool edit to cut all frequecys and keep only low levels )
--------------------------------------------------------------------
To test your sound, and see what's going to happend in every single channel, just follow these simple steps :
If you wanna test your Rear channels ( just mute center, LFE and front channels ) and play with your thing. ( in your mind, you know these are going to be rear channels, so... don't be so complicated.
Do the same with your front channels and check your center and LFE.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Export your 6 tracks and encode them with any AC3 encoder.
I use the AC3 encoder that comes with Scenarist.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
TO GET A REAL PROFESSIONAL DOWNMIXED SOUND WHEN ALL CHANNELS ARE MIXED FOR STEREO PURPOSE, YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND HOW SOUND REALLY WORKS, CAUSE THAT'S AN ART OF EDITING. SO DON'T ASK.
HOPE IT HELPS. -
I just found and am testing Cinematic MP3. It claims to be able to create 6 channel (5.1) surround MP3s from 2 to 6 soources.
If I use this to generate the 5.1 soundtrack, could I then have the mp3 converted as part of the dvd encoding process (with AC3 encoder?)
Another alternative I have found (very complicated it seems) is to use a program, like audiomulch, which use VST plug ins and use a set of ambisonic(sp?) plug ins than generate surround effects and then save the 6 separate wave files. But if I do this, I am not sure how to include all 6 in a dvd authoring process and assign them correctly.
As you can tell, I am a newbie to this subject, and am trying to find public license or low cost options so I can learn enough to tell if I can learn this well enough to get good at it.
Thanks,

Is there a program that will let me turn 2ch stereo sound in the 5 channels. I know it won't be true surround sound but it would be good just to get the audio out of all 5 speakers instead of just the front two.
Any help would be appreciated. -
3 lashes for everyone!! This is madness! Does anyone even begin to read the forum before asking this question? Every other post is "how do i convert stereo to surround??? And it always ends with the SAME ANSWER! It's STOOOPID to even try!
ahhhhh...

Like everyone else said before, if your audio source is stereo, just use Dolby Pro Logic II on your reciever. It will do a decent 5.1 surround conversion on the fly, and will probably sound better than anything you can try and do on your home PC or just having six mono signals coming out of your speakers.

Register to be a member of this website www.fukrulez.com. Then go to download section/audio and download Sonic Foundry soft encode. Remember to read on the "comment" of this software, that's where you can have it works.
This software can encode to 5.1 dolby digital from 2 channel wav file. Load the 2-channel wav file from "open file". Wait until it is done, then go back and load the same wav file again, and load the same wav file again, Once it is done, you have 5.1 channels.
This is not prefect, true 5.1 dolby digital as from the hollywood movies, but hey, it is 5.1 dolby digital surround sound home movie.
You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning.
