Video for Windows DV codec

I was hoping to use the mainconcept dv codec to bring captured avi from virtualdub to pinnacle studio 7. I HAVE tried to use the MC codec (trial) but in VD I get an "error getting compressor output format size" message. I was wondering if this had anything to do with the odd? 704 x 480 capture with asus capture card? With capture
intended for dv, must it be at 740 x 480?

Standard NTSC DV video must be 720x480, so that's probably your problem. You could try frameserving your video from VirtualDub, which would produce no quality loss and avoid intermediate files. However, if you're doing lots of editing, I don't know how well a frameserved video would work for that.

If you want to convert your 704x480 video to DV resolution, add 16 pixels to sides via the letterboxing option of VirtualDub's resize filter. (Don't just resize from 704 to 720 or you'll alter the aspect ratio.)

In VD the top part of the resize filter box has new height and width and mode(which is the best?)

The bottom part of the box has selectable "expand frame and letterbox". i filled in the numbers at the top and put a tick in the box...

Is this what you meant?

In your case, if you want to convert the video from 704x480 to 720x480 while maintaining the same aspect ratio, you won't be resizing. Therefore, the resize filter mode is unimportant. What you should do is enter 704x480 for the new width/height, check the "Expand frame and letterbox image" box, and enter 720x480. This will add 16 columns of black pixels to the left/right sides of the video, which is necessary to preserve the correct aspect ratio for DV.
