First of all I want to say that this site is awesome. I have been lurking and reading all I can absorb to gain some knowledge. The How tos are very good, and easy to follow.

Here is my question. backed up, and burned my first dvd. I ripped it with dvd decypher, used shrink to resize, and nero to burn to a DVD R-, and then to a DVD-R+

The problem is here. Both of the DVDs will play on my computer, but neither will play on my standalone DVD. It is a JVC XV-S40, and is about 3 years old. When I put the disk in the LCD screen says error.

Does this mean that my dvd player doesn't play the burned DVD media, or have I burned the disk wrong? I am willing to buy a new DVD player that plays the burned media, but I dont want to put out the cash, unless I know I have to.

I look forward to learning more as I go, and hope to be a regular member here.

    Thanks in advance

    Welcome

    One of these yours?
    https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=JVC+XV-S40&Submit=Search&Search=Search&...=&orderby=Name

IF DVD plays correctly on computer, then structure is correct
Try DVD-RW ( i believe you ment to type that when you put R-)
If no why did you go from -R to +R?
If DVD-RW plays then perhaps player has issues. Get it to a shrink

Generally, any DVD player more than 2 years old would be suspect. Most DVD players made within the last 2 years accept a wider array of media. Try the DVD's that you have burned on a friends player, or go to a store with several players hooked up and try your burns there.

Instead of using DVD DECRYPTER just use DVD SHRINK to compress and then use NERO to burn. Try using a DVD-RW or DVD+RW so you don't waste anymore media. If the dvd movie is a DVD5 single layer you can use DVD DECRPYTER to read in ISO MODE, then burn the ISO IMAGE.

Here's a guide on DVD DECRYPTER:

  6. When you are burning, are you placing all the VOB and IOF files into a VIDEO_TS directory.

Once the DVD is complete, you should have two directories:

VIDEO_TS containing all files from DVD Shrink
AUDIO_TS Empty (This is rarely required these days, but it cannot hurt to put it in)

Also, I second the suggestion that you just use DVD Shrink to complete all the decoding and compression work.

  8. You are way off the mark, and really it does not take much looking to find out. They are different formats of media, best compared to VHS and Betamax in the video tape world. Read here :

    Good morning.

Thanks so far to all that have responded. Let me see if I can answer some of the questions.

I switched media from the DVD-R, to DVD+R because the first one I did didnt work. I used the standard settings on Nero.

I have given the disks to a buddy to try on his newer machines.

I will try DVD RWs, but grabbed a few singles as I was anxious.

I think I will be looking for a cheap player to play with my burned media.

I have read mixed reviews about using Shrink or decrypter (I think I put decypher in original message) but I will be trying everything.

Headin home to get some sleep...nightshift is great for research...LOL

Forget NERO for DVD burning ...

Create an ISO IMAGE FILE with ImgTools CLASSIC VERSION then burn that ISO IMAGE FILE using DVD Decrypter.

If you use DVDShrink the newest version can create an ISO IMAGE FILE for you. So you could do that then burn in DVD Decrypter.

For programs that don't create ISO IMAGE FILES but instead only give you a VIDEO_TS folder of files (IFO, BUP, VOB) then use ImgTools Classic Version to create your ISO IMAGE FILE then burn with DVD Decrypter.

Very simple. Pain free. No problems playing it back.

Again I stress ... forget using NERO for DVD Video burning.

  12. I have a question on top of his question: I've backed up using dvd x-copy and it works very well (plays on my cpu and on my standalone dvd player). However, there are some instances where dvd x-copy will not read or burn a movie, so I use decrypter, shrink and then roxio to burn. When I do this, the copy will play on my cpu but will not play on my standalone. Any conclusions?

Newest version of DVDShrink can make an ISO IMAGE FILE for you. You can even set it up I think to auto launch DVD Decrypter for burning. So if you set it up correctly you can leave the computer once you start up DVDShrink and come back with a completed DVD that is burned and ready to be played.

  14. Parmcat, you'd be wise to try another burning method before buying a new player. You've already gotten two excellent suggestions.
