  1. Hi,
I've had the Philips DVDR70 since the beginning of February and last Wednesday I had an error recording a 1hour programme in M6 on my Maxell DVD+R discs (I bought 15 of them and have successfully used 9 of them, 8 being finalised already).

The programme finished, and I pressed stop, but as it was returning back to the menu, it said "Disc Error" and then stayed there. I turned it off and took out the disc and put it back in, and it read for about 40minutes, before saying "Unknown Data." I had already recorded 4 episodes on the same disc, and there would have been at least 1hour left of recording time.

I then tried to finalise another disc, and this time the machine powered off and the red light came on. This disc also says "Unknown data."

Since then I have recorded a few shows on other DVD+R discs (the same Maxell ones from Argos) and no problem, even finalised a few.

However yesterday I had another Disc Error whilst recording the 4th episode of The OC on Channel 4 (the first 3 were already on there).

Is there any way of salvaging the data on these discs or are they just to be binned? And is my DVD recorder broken? I have contacted Philips by e-mail, but I have not heard back from them - I sent them an e-mail on Thursday and had an auto-reply but nothing since.

I tried to install the FF16d upgrade, and all I get told is "Error Downloading" followed by "Bad Disc" after about 5minutes of "Init Disc."

    Please help!
    Steve B

i have this player also, although i have not had this happen to me apart from once with a brand new dvd+rw disc, but i just put that down to the disc being faulty as after that id not had the same problem. i had heard from a guy i know who has this recorder also that some models had a design fault in the lazer system and as such philips would repair these models free off charge if you send it to them. if i was you i would give the philips uk head office a call and speak to them directly, as it is alot easier than waiting around for tech support to email you back.
as for saving the data on the discs, perhaps if you rip the contents of the discs to your computer and try a dvd authoring program that accepts vob files and see if it can be reauthored or re encoded. the other thing i would say is not many people rate maxell discs, either cdr or dvdr as they can be problematic. personally in my dvdr70 i use infinti dvd+rw philips dvd+rw and datawrite dvd+r, i dont have problems with this media and its relatively cheap to buy.
but best of luck and i hope you get it sorted.
