Hey!
For 2 years now I have a Plextor 40/12/40a and I'm thinking about buying something new.
But the problem is that I don't know weather to buy a new dvd writer or a new cd writer.
My question is: Do dvd writers burn audio cds in the same quality as cd writers or is there a quality loss?
Because I think that cd writers are better in burning audio cds because they are specialised on cds as dvd writers are specialised on dvds. And two in one hardware can't be as good as a specialised piece of hardware. Or am I wrong?
Thanks for all answers.
greets from Slowenia!

They work just fine. Usually cd writers can write cds faster than dvd/cd writers.

If your Plextor still works ok you could leave it in and add a DVD-RW if you have room in your case. and carry on using that to burn cd if you want to keep the speed.

Yes forget upgrading your CD writer. You probably won't get 30 seconds difference with a 52X vs your 40X. Although you can get one for $20 or less after rebates, so upgrade if you want just do it after some other upgrades.
First get a good cheap DVD writer. With 8X being relatively new and dropping and dual layer coming soon enough, don't spend a bunch of money right now. Keep it under $100 and save any more you might spend for your next burner etc. You can still probably get a cheap 8X for under $100 really. Also try and get dual format for _ and + R, that way you can buy what's on sale and try both for whatever works best for you.
Your HD is decent for now, but for only $100 or around you could get a new MB and processor (may need new ram too though). Should be able to get into the 2.4 GHz range or so without too great of a cost. Get the DVD player first though, you can be learning that and then shop around for MB/processor a bit later.
Also if you don't already have one, you'll want a cheap DVD player that can play most formats around the same time you get your DVD recorder. Get one that can play VCD/SVCD too, that way you'll be able to try out some of everything. Should be able to get a good one for $50 or less, use the guides here to shop for features.
If you're liking working with CDs etc just wait till you're burning video, it's even more fun.
