  1. Is there a free utility out there to grab a frame off a DVD and save it as a jpg or bmp file?

  2. i use WinDVD to watch my movies, and it has a screencapture function built in. I would imagine there are other programs that do it too, but this one is very easy.

VirtualDubMod is a FREEWARE that can import VOB files. So RIP the DVD to your HDD using DVD Decrypter in FILE MODE and then load a VOB file into VirtualDubMod and then copy and paste frames into any IMAGE EDITING program.

  4. Look around for a dvd media pack for windows XP, it'll allow you to watch DVDs on your computer using wmp.

Then you can just get Media Player Classic (it's free) and it has a screenshot option that'll save to bmp for you

It only allows you to save as avi. If you want to save as mpeg use Womble MPEG2 VCR.

ok then - i have a good idea now - so for video's like dave matthews and pantera that are really big and you need to re-author - and you still want the start up mpeg/avi when the dvd starts - you can re-author and split it in half -
    - you can open up the whole movie in virtualdub w/ the vob files and edit it so only the begining avi/mpeg footage is playing - then save that as an avi - since you cant save it to an mpeg -
now you have the begining clip that starts up as the original menu does -
    - you can printmenu for the meu screen and make that load as the background in tmpgenc author and make that avi that you just made from virtual dub for the opening part of the dvd - you can also make seperate ones for when new menu's load - hmmmm - if i am thinking right this should work - this is what i was thinking about doing - i wanted to back up these video's but didnt want a stupid looking menu - i wanted it as original as possible and i couldnt figure out how to do it with the menu editor
    programs
    - so now the 2 original video's that were split can be put together with the opening avi and new background menu's w/ tmpgenc dvd author -
