  1. Hi,
If this was a Mac problem, I probably would not be posting, but I am new to
    pc's so I hope there's help here.
What I want to do is record to my pc from my dat deck. Sound goes from the
dat out thru coax into my Edirol UA-30 USB audio interface and from there it
is usb'd into the pc. On the pc I have installed Cool Edit Pro LE. The sound
is obviously getting from the dat deck to the UA-30 cause all the lights
flash and it plays through the headphones attached to the usb converter.
But, when I create a new capture in Cool Edit and hit record, no sound shows
up. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Don

I don't have that exact version, but in mine, you have to pick Tool -> Options -> Devices (or something similar) to pick which sound input your trying to record. Cool Edit does not automatically find the right sound input device and often defaults to the Wav Mapper driver. I don't have a UA-30, but I do use a similar device (Sound Devices USBPre) that uses the USB protocol.

The one good thing is that as long as your USB cable is plugged in when you start Cool Edit, it will always remember your last device selection.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Thanx, L,
It's Options-Settings-Devices and you can select a Waveform Playback and a Waveform Record. So, I should secet my UA30 in the Waveform Record, right? That's what I have been doing and still it does not record from the UA. Any other ideas?
    Thanx,
    Don

I'm not familiar with the UA 30, but does it have multiple ins and outs?

I use Cool Edit with an Echo Layla card, which has 8 inputs and 10 outputs, as well as a digital in/out. when I go to set the wave input, it gives me a list of all 8 inputs (4 stereo pairs) and the digital input, and lets me select whichever I need.

Is it possible that you selected a UA 30 input, but not the right one?

I would try and isolate the problem by determining if the problem is with Cool Edit, or with your hardware. Try recording with Windows Wave Recorder. You'll have to pick the default in control panel. Also, instead of trying to record from the DAT, try recording from an analog source.

  6. Ok, we're getting somewhere - but not where I would like to be. Per your suggestion, I tried analog out from the dat deck into the Lines In on the UA-30 and that works. CE sees the signal and will record it. But, when I unplug the analog line from the UA-30 and use the Coax line out from the dat into the Coax In on the Ua30, CE does not see the signal. Could it be that I need to totally unplug the analog line from the dat deck, or restart the pc when I go from Line to Coax?
    Thanx i a,

  7. Hi, things are starting to work on this system but I still need help on two points with Cool Edit. Btw, the pc is now seeing both Optical in and Coax in from the dat deck to the UA30 and I can record those signals. The problems are: 1) whether it's the Optical or Coax signal the recordings from each play back at a fast speed and it sounds like the Chipmonks talking. Recording with Line In plays back normally. 2) Cool Edit automatically stops recording after about 12.5 seconds! How do I get this Cool Edit Pro LE to record as long as I need it to go?
    Thank you Very much,
    Don

  8. Um, I figured out how to do a regular full-length recording... BUT! How do I have the recorded Optical or Coax signals play back at normal speed?

are you playing back a 44.1 signal at 48?

I've done this on ADATs, too many times to count...

  10. House, on this particular recording I used the Long recording mode on the dat recorder on location and am playing back in that Long mode at 32 khz. The selector switch on the UA30 has either 44.1 or 48 choices - not choice for 32. Could this be the problem?
    Thanx,

that could be it... you might be stuck using analog instead of digital to transfer... (which, if you're going directly from a DAT to a recorder, shouldn't degrade the signal significantly).

you might check and see what your UA30 manual says about clock selection - there may be a way to disable the clock that is in use with a digital input, so that it's not locking to 44.1 or 48 - but trying to play a 32k sample at 44.1k would be a 30% speed increase, so I'm not surprised at the chipmunking...
