  1. For the past couple of days, I have been trying to figure out how to take a QuickTime movie trailer that is in the .MOV format and convert it into a file format that can then be used with DVD Shrink. I basically want to make a backup of my favorite movies but add some new movie trailers at the beginning.

An earlier posting I made resulting in someone suggesting that I use a program called TMPGenc to convert .MOV files into .MPG files that I can later burn using a DVD authoring application.

Following the instructions I was given on how to use TMPGenc, this is what I did:
    1) I downloaded the HELLBOY movie trailer from www.apple.com/movies to use as my test source file.
    2) STEP 1: Using the TMPGenc Wizard, I selected DVD-> NTSC (16:9) because I plan to view the trailer on my Sony Widescreen HDTV. I also selected CBR MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2) because the guide suggested that.
    3) STEP 2: I selected the HELLBOY video file "hellboy-tsr_480m.mov" that I downloaded and it appeared in both the video and audio sections. I kept everything the same under Expert Setting for Source except for the aspect ratio, which I changed to 16:9 525 line (NTSC).
    4) STEP 3: I clicked Other to access the Advanced Tab where I kept everything the same except that I changed the Video arrange Method to Full Screen (keep aspect ratio).
    5) STEP 4: I kept everything the same.
    6) STEP 5: I encoded the file and it became an .MPG file.

Although I succeeded at producing an .MPG file that works well with Microsoft’s Media Player, I still don’t know what I need to do to make the file work with DVD shrink. How can I convert this .MPG file into a .ISO or some other file that DVD Shrink will recognize so that I can use the re-author feature found in DVD Shrink?

Also, since my goal is to make the movie trailer appear as good as possible on a widescreen TV, what are the best settings to use with TMPGenc?

I’d like to thank everybody in advance for helping me with my particular project.

    Yours,
    Ren

  2. now that you have an mpg file, you need to author the dvd.
use a program like tmpgenc dvd author, dvdlab, etc to create menus and make your mpg files dvd compliant.

Thank you so much for the tip! I used TMPGEnc DVD Author and the program created a directory with subdirectories called AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. There was nothing within the AUDIO_TS folder, but the VIDEO_TS folder contained .BUP, .IFO, and .VOB files.

The next step I took involved using DVD Shrink because I wanted to use the Re-Author feature to add this trailer to the beginning of a movie. DVD Shrink successfully generated the single .ISO file I needed to then successfully burn the combined trailer and movie onto a DVD-R. The movie played fine but the trailer had no sound. Should I be doing something different with TMPGEnc Encoder?

    Thanks,
    Ren

Can you please explain how this can be done using either QuickTime Pro, TMPGEnc, or TMPGEnc DVD Author? These are the programs I'm using.

    Thank you so much!

Thanks, BJ_M. I'll try that. I'm still not sure I understand why this would work, especially since the QuickTime movie is NOT in 5.1. Does the plug-in somehow change the audio to 5ch stereo?

That is so cool. I just went to website http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/index.html of the folks who sell TMPGEnc Plus 2.5, DVD Author 1.5, and the AC3 Plug-in. To get all the products, which it seems I would need, I'd have to spend about $129. Are there any less expensive alternatives?

    Thanks,
    Ren

    run the trailer through virtualdub
    -click on streams
    -click on list streams
-right click on the audio stream you want and choose full processing
-right click on it again and click on convert...if it's already 48000 mhz, leave it. if it's something other than 48000 mhz, put a dot next to 48000 mhz and click ok
    -click on save wave
-once it's done saving as a wave file, run it through ffmpeggui and change it to ac3

you can then create vob files, using tmpgenc dvd author, by adding the mpg file and changing the audio to the ac3 file you created.
select the no menu option. once the vob files are created, use dvdshrink to add the two titles together.
