  1. I have captured mjpeg avi files with very good quality but I seem to be getting white and/or black lines especially during fast motion scenes. When I do a conversion from avi to mpeg2 the lines diappear and the video looks flawless after burning it to dvd and watching on my tv.

But, when I use a video editing program such as adobe premiere pro or vegas 4, I get problems. I make all the edits I need then I save them to avi so that I won't lose any quality. So essentially I still have an avi file but with all my edits and the same white/black lines that show up during fast motion/action scenes. When I then try to convert my edited avi file to mpeg2, the white/black lines remained while watching on my tv. I beleive this is an interlace issue but I am not sure since I know for sure I was using upper fields when I converted to mpeg2. Also, the resolution seems to be incorrect as my tv shows black bars on the top and bottom of video (similar to dvd black bars) using 720x480 resolution.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

does indeed sound like an interlace issue, any chance of you putting up a screen grab for us to look at?

as for your DVD player letter boxing the video, is your encoder outputting 16:9 instead of 4:3?

We could do with a bit more info really.

  3. I think I figured out what I did wrong (and this is just a theory so I could be wrong). After finishing my edits, I mistakenly rendered the video using DV avi which automatically uses the bottom field. When I tried to convert to the final mpeg2 file, even if you choose the upper field, you will still get the bottom field because I had rendered it previously as DV avi. I couldn't see any difference in the secong avi file on my computer monitor compared to the original avi file so I thought it was just fine. Right now I am re-rendering my project directly to mpeg2 to remove any doubt as to the correct field order. I'll let you know if it worked and if my theory was correct.

Sorry flaninacupboard, I can't get a good enough capture of the lines I mentioned before as the non-moving picture just doesn't show the lines as it would be seen if there were high motion. As far as the aspect ratio is concerned I still don't have an answer as to why I see the black bars but perhaps what I am doing now will resolve that issue as well. Let ya know later.

  4. Well I just redid a small clip of my project but it came out the same way. I still get the black and white lines across the screen. Here is a capture I was able to get that shows what I mean.

I hope the picture shows. Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Could it be the encoder? I am using Main concept encoder that comes in Vegas 4.0.
