Advice on codecs please...

I have an avi file and am trying to save a wav file from it with VirtualDub;


Video
320x272 fps 29.970
167611 frames
XviD Mpeg-4 Codec
Data Rate 920Kbps

Audio
Sample rate 48000Hz
2 channel stereo
Compression Unknown (tag 0055)
Data Rate 114Kbps




When i run VirtualDub and try to save the wav it says i don't have the appropriate codec installed, although GSpot says I have four:


The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:

--> {Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (professional)}
--> {Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (professional)}
--> {LAME MP3 Codec (coder only)}
--> {MPEG Layer-3 Decoder}


The file also plays in windows media player ok, with sound, I also have two compatible video codecs installed,

The following codecs should both capable of processing this format:

{XviD MPEG-4 Codec}
{3ivx D4 Video Decoder}

DirectShow is apparently able to play the file as well (see "DirectShow Render", below)

Could anyone offer me some advise on this please, do I have to many codecs installed? if so which ones to i need to get rid of ? I notice some appear twice in the listings.

Compression Unknown (tag 0055)

I believe, from memory, that this is MP3 audio. Backed up by:

--> {Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (professional)}
--> {LAME MP3 Codec (coder only)}
--> {MPEG Layer-3 Decoder}

It may be that the MP3 is VBR (Variable BitRate - which VitrualDub may struggle with (from memory - I might be getting confused). Look into variants of VirtualDub that can handle VBR audio.

I'm not sure on this, just dredging stuff from deep memory in case it helps...
