  1. I heard that its possible to make a svcd with 5.1 sound, but you need linux software. Does anyone know any other way of doing it?

  3. Actually, Xitanium, the answer would be:

    1. Yes, you can make a VCD with 5.1 multichannel MPEG-2 audio
    2. Yes, the method required Linux software
    3. Well, I don't know of another way.

Mind you, it is extremely unlikely that you're going to find a DVD player that will actually play the 5.1 MC-MPEG audio as multichannel audio.

  4. I hear alot of people saying that you cant find mpeg 5.1 hardware outside of asia, but in the beginning of dvd ac-3 was supposed to be the standard in usa and mpeg 5.1 in europe.

Some dvds were released here with only mpeg 5.1, but they changed their mind and now ac-3 is the standard here as well.

However most dvd-players and audio receivers here support all three 5.1 systems (DTS, AC-3 and MPEG 5.1).

I cant see why the multichannel mpeg wouldnt be decoded properly.

  5. Simple, because mc mpeg audio in those devices are for DVD. Think of why you can't mux an AC-3 track in a S/VCD even though essentially all DVD players can play AC-3?

Even if you do find a DVD player that does support mc mpeg audio, you have to find one that will utilise this during playback for SVCD. Very few do.
