  1. I am trying to convert an xvid movie to mpeg/mpeg 2 (preferably mpeg svcd) for burning to cd to play in my dvd player. I have been converting for a few years now, and use Tmpeg plus. However, the software doesnt like the file, it crashes a little while into the file. Any ideas? Any settings I should change??

    Thanx.

Well first make sure you have the correct codecs installed when attempting to open or convert any DivX/XviD file. The best way to find out what codecs your movie requires or have been encoded in and what version of that codec is to use GSpot. Open the file in GSPot and then look at what codecs are listed for the video.

If you already have the codec installed that GSpot says it requires then I suggest re-installing the codec. If that still does not fix it try uninstalling the current codec and install another version or brand. Also if your movie has been endcoded with AC3 sound, you will also need a AC3 codec, GSpot will also tell you if it has AC3 or MPEG Layer-II Audio. If the video codec says DivX then you will need to download the codec for the version of DivX is says it was encoded in, if it says XviD you will need an XviD codec in the version it says it was encoded in. Please make sure you know the difference as they are different. A DivX codec may or may not (usually not) work with XviD files and visa versa.

The codecs is probably the problem for your crashes. If you don't have the right one installed for a certain video type then it's going to give you problems. That should fix the problem.

If you think the problem is not with the codecs and is TMPGEnc, then try the following.

In TMPGEnc, click on Option > Environmental Setting..., on the "VFAPI Plug-in" tab right click on the "DirectShow Multimedia File Reader" option and up the priority by 1 and try again. If still nothing up the priority by 1 more. If you continue to have problems try lowering the priority.

If you continue to receive problems then there may be some errors in the video file. Open the movie in VirtualDub and click on "Video > Scan Video Stream for Errors" to check the video for errors.

I hope this info helps, if not feel free to post any updates.

    Regards,
    Mike
