  1. Ok,

So this bleeping computer project is driving me crazy. Thanks to some others on this site I at least have the computer up and running (well sort of)

My problem is this.... I have no sound when I insert a disc wether it be cd or dvd. I even tried ripping a ccd to hard drive and then tried playing the file off my harddrive and still no sound .

    I used the mB driver disc and even got updtaes from their site. I downloaded windows media player 9 and I also have power dvdv(ver.4?}

The speakers are new and . They are conneccted correctly. working and It is connected in the MB correctly I double checked. The drive is memorex dvd rom and mb is mach speed v4mdmp

Any suggestions on how I cacn resolve this issue?

    Thanks

I know this might seem kind of obvious but are they muted?

Do you have the little speaker down by the clock in the system tray?

If you do you can double click it and it will bring up the volume control window make sure they "Mute" box is not checked.

If there is not a speaker ICON in the systray. Then you need to go to:

Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > volume tab

and check the check box that says "Place volume Icon on taskbar" and it will show up.

You might also want to check the other tabs and make sure you have your sound card selected...for example on the audio tab all the drop boxes in my system say "creative sound blaster".

Depending on your MoBo you may have to set those things. I have an ASUS MoBo and it's onboard sound is C-Media, which was set by default when I installed the mother board.

  3. northcat_8,

thanks for the reply butr I tried all that, Btw I just pulled out a pair of headphones and hooked them up to the drive itself and that worked.

So the problem lies between the drive out put to mother board or mother board to speakers.

Try going to your sound dialog with a double click on the speaker icon and go to Advanced and check if "Alow" or "Use" digital audio is checked. Either select it or deselect it.

    Should have sound.

By the way, there are stupid questions, and they are usually the ones you don't know the answer to.

If you don't understand that, I'll post the Dilbert version sometime.

  8. Open your sound properties menu/display, the one that has the volume bar levels. Go to properties and select all of them listed under playback. Then make sure they're not muted. Some motherboards bypass the Sound card if your "System Speaker" is turned on in the BIOS/CMOS, the one that beeps when you turn the computer on. Only had it happen once so it's worth a try.
    Also:
    right click "My Computer"
    slecet "Properties"
    Hardware tab
    Device manager
make sure there are no yellow Highlighs on your audio devices.
    Try to reload the drivers.

The speakers are new and . They are conneccted correctly. working and It is connected in the MB correctly I double checked.
Check again just to be sure.. Also play an MP3 or some source of sound straight from the Hard drive and change the speaker connection on the sound card mine has 4 jacks and depending on what I have selected, 2 channel stereo or 5.1 surround the jacks will change outputs.
    Just my .02¢

Hell, to check if the speakers actually do work, plug into the earphone jack on the CD player.

You'll get sound or not, ond the volume control on the CD-ROM itself.

You will have sound from the DVD-ROM if you plug in head phones...there isn't anything to go wrong with that process :P

Well there isn't too much to go wrong with the sound.

    Connected properly - it's onboard...so CHECK
    Drivers - ???
    Unmuted - CHECK
    Volume - CHECK
    ....that's about it.

In my first reply...since you are using onboard sound, you may have to change the audio and playback devices that are appropriate for your MB. For example, on my MoBo, it's onboard sound is C-Media. So in all of those drop boxes I have to select C-Media. I installed a sound card...creative sound blaster....so I had to go through and change all of those drop boxes to the creative sound blaster device.

Also since you are dealing with onboard sound, you might need to download drivers for your MoBo. You'll just have to go to your MoBo manufacturer's website and download the drivers.

You are the guy building the new PC right? When I installed my ASUS board I had to do that before my sound would work.

  11. Update:

sso I uninstalled the drivers and then re-installed . when I went ot setup I got an error message from window saaying it is in compatible ..I am not sure if this is the problem ior not

Here are mb specs maybe someone can point me in the right direction

    Machspeed v4mdmp
via km400 memory graphics host chipset
    via vt8235 southbridge
    ac'97digital audio controller iontergrated
    ac'97 audio codec on board

I went to driver updates section from machspeed and ended up at the via arena site. I am looking for help there with no luck yet.

Can anyone help with this drivers issue as there is no support that I can find on machspeeed site.

    Thanks

Here's the only sound driver I can find from the Machspeed site, alc_sound_full.zip. About system sound; They are probably refering to this:Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds. Click on one of the program event sounds, then the black pointer beside the pointer. Of course if this was working, you would have heard the windows logon sound when booting. And you probably tried one of the other suggestions, to plug your speakers directly into your CD/DVD players headphone jack.

If your drivers are loaded and all of your sound controls are set properly, maybe there is a problem within the MB. Seems unlikely, but then you might try a PCI sound card?

  13. I downloaded that file from machspeeds site.

Like I said before I have no sound whatsoever...there is no windowss logo on sound

I will try your other suggestion. I noticed there are a lot of isssues with via ac97 sound on www.viaarena.com . I made a post there maybe someone there can help

I had so many problems with my onboard sound with my ASUS board, that I said to hell with it and went and bought a sound card. Creative Sound Blaster I believe it was. It was cheap and I have no more sound issues.

  15. UPDATE.....

I will only take take partial reponsibility .
SOYO will have to take the rest....... LOL

Here is what was happened :

When I built the computer the instructions that came with my soyo case had a bad set of instructions. The wiring diagram/instructions are for front audio inputs, which I don't have on this case. There were no instructions showing power wiring. However the wires are the same color so I got confused.

Well the wires that were in the case were obviously for power, I found that out after taking the computer apart. That is when I noticed that there was writring on the leads of the wires for hdd led, pwrbtn, etc. Well I got it back topgether and viola power!... the system was running, but with no sound

Now here is where I went wrong when I hooked up the pwr wires to the audio in/out headers . I never replaced the original jumpers..I completely forgot that I removed them until the tech support guy from machspeed went through enerything with me. he then had me look at the jumper on the audio header and of course there weren't any so I put the jumpers bacck on and I now HAVE SOUND !

So I would like to take this time to publically THANK YOU guys for trying to help me especially because it was my stupidity. I would like to especially THANK northcat_8 for sticking with me til the end.

I would also like to point out that maybe gmatov was right , maybe there are stupid questions ...LOL

    Thanks again everyone

Ohhh...got blindsided by those jumpers....that's easy to do, there's only about 90,000 of them...haha.

Had that issue myself, system would go to post then go to the BIOS with a case had been tampered with warning....except I don't have a case switch....so after some calls and people telling me my MoBo was trashed...I did some reading and one of my jumpers had come loose or had lost contact and was causing the problem. I replaced the jumper and life was good again.

Well Congrats on getting it working. No worries about the help, I love the troubleshooting and trying figuring stuff out.

  17. northcat_8,

Yeah I can't beleive that a case company would use the same color wires for both audio and power .... I mean really how many colors are there in the world.

I was in such a rush to build this computer I forgot to retrace some of my steps

    Thanks again

    VCD,

Slipped my mind that some boards have the pinout for front audio connectors, and they are jumpered for use without the front output. I had one once that I tried the front audio connectors for and it would not work, no longer use them.

Blows my mind that you must have been connecting the comp's control wire to the wrong set of pinouts, having removed jumpers to do it.

I know the next time you build one, you will read any imprint on the wire ends.

Little chance, anyhow, of doing any damage, as the wires end up at speaker, mike, aux input-output, with nothing connected to the jacks, no contact made.

    Aggravating though, ain't it?

    Cheers,

    George
