Help!!! Can anyone explain to me the pros and cons of Digital Coaxial as opposed to Optical?? I just got a new Panasonic 5 Disc DVD changer--DVD F87S. Had to buy on line as it is not in the stores yet. It has every feature I want, both mechanical and cosmetic. But, one think it lacks is an Optical output--only digital coaxial. I am using Monster Cables best digital coax--Is there any audible difference between Digital Coax and Optical??? It sounds great but I just wonder if I am missing any sound quality.
Thanks for your help---Dave![]()

Although I am no expert, I believe the digital coax would have better sound quality (signal) than the toslink. I base this on conversations with tech support at several retail websites and 2 conversations at a high end eloctronics store. I needed a variety of cables for audio/video out of my computer into my receiver and tv. Anyone please feel free to correct this if it is wrong.

I use both coaxial digital and optical cables with my home theatre system hooked up to my DENON reciever and it has both. Now the optical cable regardless of quality works just about the same, but on the coaxial cable it is very important to use a double shielded cables because it is more likely to pick up hum and ground loops . So it is best to get premium cables for coax digital where toslink will not pick up hum or distortion but its alot more fragile than coax so its a toss up they both have strong and weak points but the sound quality is about the same and they both carry dolby and dts 5.1. I hope this helps.

I doubt if you will pick up the difference not knowing which one has been used. Nobody plays with cables daily (don't remember when I did that myself) so sturdiness is a non issue. As pointed out optical is resistant to interference. And that is about it. Sears sells reasonably priced good quality cables, check it out. In my opinion spending 150 bucks for cable is an overkill.
