When this has happened to me, it has been the fault of the media. Unlike vinyl records, DVDs record from the center outwards, and cheap media seems to be defective around the outer edge. One solution if you want to try to use up your crappy media would be to set the output file from Shrink to a smaller size so you won't be writing right to the edge of the disc, or use the crappy media for data only and try a different brand for video.

  3. Yes the media is cheap.

On Shrink set the size to 4100Gb. This will give you good results on cheap media.

  5. I don't think tdk is bad and cheap media...
Although I agree that bad media is a significant cause of trouble in burning proper backups maybe you should try other software to solve this problem. I had this same problem myself (freezing on 2/3s of the movie, exact same point each time, no matter what media) and I found out that this was caused by the combination of shrink+nero. I use DVD X Copy ever since with ANY media and NO problems !!! I know X Copy is not for free but maybe there is other free software that you could try to solve the problem...

  6. I've been putting old video tapes onto DVD and I've found exactly the same problem about 2/3rds through the film I get freezing up and picture going blocky/pixely. V.annoying I've made about 6 coasters, does it make a difference if you change the speed settings for writing ie: change from Max to 2x ?

  7. As Morloc said above, it's probably the media.
If you are using good media, you shouldn't need to reduce the size of your files or burn at a slower speed.
Try to get hold of some Ritek G04's and try these .... they will make a world of difference.
TDK's are normally good, but be careful as there are lots of fakes doing the rounds

I have even tried 1X. The same freezing again! The only time I got a perfect backup with the shrink+nero combo was when I recorded on a DVD-RW. you could try this too. But I insist, try other software as well...

  10. My DVD Writer writes at x4. Just tried on x1 and works a beaut. Is pretty much common sense, easier to write to a slower revolving disk than a faster one ! The centre of the disk (ie: end of film) is spinning faster than the outside.

Actually its the other way round, the outside moves faster than the centre (there is more distance to travel in 1 revolution), and the end of the film is on the outside not the centre. DVD burners write from the centre to the edge.

  12. yip - it's more than likely the media at fault. I didn't believe it at first but by trial & error I found it was just the disks I was using that caused the freezing etc.

I have a A06 and tried various types before I got a successful 'whole movie' burnt.

So I'd agree with most people that the Ritek G04 disks are the business. Mind you I've had some probs with a NEC 2500 but that's another story.

    Bye

but it should be noted: "cheap media" may have another problem then outer edge errors. The very nature of it being "cheap" may also mean that it won't last.

In other words, there is a very real possibility that a year or two from now, the rest of the disk could fail as well. A lot of people have said that dvd's they made on cheap media which played fine at first, wouldn't play at all after a few months.
