  1. Hi all, ok, have got a PC specifically for audio ( home recording ) and video editing/dvd burning..

I am going to be running windows 98SE< ( as my budget won`t stretch to WIN XP), and want to strip win98 down as much as poss to just the bare bones, i.e. get rid of all non-essential applications and programs.

SO, which ones are ESSENTIAL, and which ones can I get rid of without any problems?

I understand it`s poss to get rid of sound/media files, screensavers, schemes/themes, etc, so what else can go, to hopefully ensure a barebones/smooth running system?

    Thanks,
    PL

I've used it before (back in the WIN98 days) and it's not bad. You do get a lesson in what needs what. Some programs use pieces of Windows and expect them to be there (schedular for one). I kept finding myself chasing problems and finding out I needed to put something back.

Still, it does work and $25 isn't too bad (although you could put the $25 toward XP but that has even more crap). Windows Tweak Manager (link below) is another good program for streamlining how Windows works. It doesn't remove things per se, but it does turn things off that slow Windows down. The demo does a lot and it's free. Works on all versions so you could use it when you upgrade to XP.

If you do it on your own don't forget to skip messenger, games, extra sounds, themes, wordpad, disc compression, hyperterminal, fax services.
