Hi guys,
I'd like to be able to extract the subtitles from DVDs that I own, and be able to view the English along-side foreign language subtitles.
In my quest to learn Italian (and soon French), I've been watching Italian DVD movies with subtitles in English and Italian. It'd be oh so useful to be able to have these dialogues in text files, for both languages. Basically I need to extract the subtitles files and make them readable in something like TextEdit. What I need is something close to this Windows program:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/subtitle_tools/vobsub.cfm
which works in conjunction with:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/virtualdub.cfm
Now I need an OSX solution. Perhaps TitleLab could do it? Do you know of such subtitle extractors/rippers for Mac OS X?
http://www.azinesoftware.com/titlelab.php
(oops, just tried it, it seems like TitleLab isn't up to the task of doing this for DVDs)
By the way, **which files on the DVD are the subtitle files**??
"Cellulo can also import subtitles from the most popular file formats and
have them displayed over the movie. No setup required, just drop your
subtitle file and watch the show."
http://www.cellulo.info/
Others say use Virtual PC:

I'd like to find an OSX native solution for doing this.
Thank you all in advance.

lupin? as in THE LUPIN?
sorry wish i could help you out man...
Id love to learn another language from movies... what a sweet idea! -
I doubt it's THE lupin (as in the creator of DVDBackup). I don't think there are any solutions to do what you want in OS X. I'd suggest using those apps you mentioned for Windows in VirtualPC. They should perform OK, as they aren't too processor-intensive, as long as you can avoid encoding or decoding movies in VirtualPC.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté." -

Thanks for the tips guys. Maybe I will load up VPC. I have a 1GHz TiBook, running Panther, 1GB RAM . . . which version of Windows should I load up?

Win2K. It's the only one that performs acceptably in VPC. Oh, and of course I know who Lupin III is, he's my hero, if only he could score with Fujiko...
