  1. Hi,

Does CloneDVD backup original DVD like DVDxCopy does? How would you compare both programs?

    Thanks.

    IMO they're both crap.

DVDXCopy for a start puts a warning screen on each backup and you cannot backup a backup using DVDXCopy again, even though that is not the only method.

Check the guide in my signature for a free alternative to ripping and encoding. There are other ways of burning though because Nero is not free.
    If in doubt, Google it.

DVDXCopy products always seem to get a bad rap. I've used DVDXCopy Express, it's hard to knock if it's video quality and ease of use you desire. I'll live with a 'warning' if it means superior video quality. The free alternative that so many love to tout is a decent program, but I'm willing to pay a couple $ for superior end results.

I was watching a movie at my friends house that he backed up using DVDXCopy. Wasn't impressed with the quality. It's not that it looked worse than my backups....it looked the same as mine.
He has tried DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter....but is more the "point and shoot" kind of guy so he prefers DVDXCopy.
To each his own I guess.

  8. Thanks for your replies... I gathered not everyone is impressed with DVDXCopy...

I saw some good notes on CloneDVD but before I buy, why do poeple say "I use it with DVD Shrink, or AnyDVD"?? Why you you need other tools to backup?

    Thanks

I've used DVD X Copy and I like it. I've used other tools as well, but for simplicity and ease of use, it's hard to beat. I'm sure no one is crazy about the 'DVD Backup' screen at the beginning of each movie, but there's an easy way around that. 321Gone (available in the tools section or at http://psidoc0.tripod.com/321Gone.zip) will bypass that screen and start the movie right up. It works with DVD X Copy 'Simple' mode (I.E. DVD X Copy Xpress or choosing Simple mode if you're using Platinum). Just click on the .exe after Step 1 (ripping) is completed and before you start Step 2 (burning). Click on the button to remove the intro screen then after it's gone (takes maybe a second or two) you start Step 2. When your DVD is complete you can jump right into the movie. Rumor has it this program also removes the 321 watermark. I use Platinum and 321Gone and I'm very happy with both. Also, as far as backing up a backup goes, you don't NEED DVD X Copy for that. Your backup is now available for a disc-to-disc copy with Nero, Easy CD/DVD or any other burning software that supports disc-to-disc copy.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

CloneDVD wont open original dvds, but using anydvd will allow you to open them. Dvdxcopy on the other hand does allow you to open an original for backup, but I think that is why dvdxcopy has to have the warning screen to cover their own asses for legal reasons basically.
If you do go for Clonedvd you will definately want Anydvd too (or some similar program if there is any)
DVDShrink does basically the same as CloneDVD but wont burn from within DVDShrink, CloneDVD does burn dvds - I think you can set DVDShrink up to burn with Nero though.
CloneDVD allows you to completely remove an extra feature and keep the menus (it'll play a black screen for a second or so in it's place watch you watch the dvd), dvdshrink doesn't allow this without removing the menus. DVDshrink allows you the compress each part of the dvd at different amounts, CloneDVD doesn't, it only compresses the whole dvd at the same amount (as far as I'm aware) - I think those are the major differences. Personally I use both depending on the dvd, but not usually both on the same dvd. Both aren't necessary to have, however dvdshrink is free, so if you get CloneDVD, you might as well get dvdshrink too. I have used CloneDVD to take out heaps of trailers but keep everything else, and then DVDShrink to compress each extra feature and menu section at different amounts - but that's probably the only reason I can think of to use both on the same dvd backup.

  11. Just one thought - with dvdshrink being free, and clonedvd having a 30 day trial version to download, and anydvd also having a 30 day trial, you could try em all out for a month and see what best suits you. If you have another dvd burning program, then dvdshrink may be all you need and you'll save some money that way.

  12. You can also download a free trial copy of Intervideo DVDCopy 2 Platinum while your at it. In fact Nero Recode 2 may also have a demo too. Just use them all within your trial period of anydvd.

  13. here is a little trick with dvdshrink
if you don't want the extras or in some cases a wide or full screen copy (some disney movies have both wide and full)
change the compression of what you don't what to still pictures and remove the audio, frees up alot of space and all the menues are there.

    cheers
