  1. Can anyone and everyone give me settings that you use for optimal quality when converting avi to mpeg2? Just trying to get a general idea of what the most common settings are for the best quality conversion. Thanks.

Depends on the AVI specs. Length, size, framerate, interlacing, resolution. All those factors determine the possible quality of the AVI, which in turn determine Whether you use Full D1, 1/2 D1 or 1/4 D1 resoltuion in TMPG.

  3. I guess there is no one setting that works best. I was kinda hoping to avoid going through a trail and error thing. I also guess there is no way of really telling which encoder is better either as one may have differing views than another in terms of percieved quality.

    M'kay here's mine:

1 or 2 CDR AVI's: 352x480 Interlaced at 23.96 with 3:2 pulldown (for 23.97 AVI's, otherwise it's 29.97), 2-pass VBR, 1000 min, 2500 Average, 6000 max. Center, keep aspect ratio. I also use a lot of 352x240 @29.97 fps progressive encode. For film sources there is absolutely no difference between the 2 (go 2-pass 300 min, 2000 avg, 4000 max).

    2 (very short movies), 3, and 4 CDR AVI's: 704x480 Interlaced at 23.96 with 3:2 pulldown (for 23.97 AVI's, otherwise it's 29.97), 2-pass VBR, 1000 min, 4000 Average, 8000 max. Center, keep aspect ratio.

Audio: I use AC3 if it's there, otherwise MP2 at usually 192K (or lower to match the source).[/b]
