  1. Hey,

I am in Australia and thinking of getting a gaming console, havent had one since my SNES so what do you suggest? We wont be getting XBox for a while and when it does it will be out of my price range hehe. I was thinking of buying a PS2 after christmas when the price drops but then I saw how cheap the Dreamcasts where, and now I am not sure which one to get.

Questions are, are dreamcast still making games? I dont want to invest in something that is going to shutdown soon.
And what do you need to do to copy games for both of these systems coz I hear the games are really big or something (up to 1gig on DC..?) ..
    Thanks.

  2. The Dreamcast is no longer being supported by Sega which is why it is so cheap... There are a number of games of the DC which are quite good and there is a good web community on the DC (do a net search and you will find).

You could consider getting a PS One but considering that a new one costs as much as a DC, I probably wouldn't. If you look around second places, you can usually grab a PSX with a dual-shock controller for about $120 or less (I got mine for $104).

In Australia, you can no longer openly buy copied PSX games or get your PSX modchipped though (Sony sued a number of operators including Paddy's Markets). However, you can still get a modchip over the net but you will have to install it yourself. It is not too difficult if you've had some soldering experience.

The PS2 is cool but damn expensive (as are the games)...

Ultimately, it is up to you.

    Regards.

    cybermage26,

I suggest getting the Nintendo Gamecube. If you a fan of Nintendo games you can't go wrong with the system. Check out http://cube.ign.com/ for information on the system.

  4. If you don't plan on spending a bunch of money on a console I suggest the Dreamcast as there are some games still being released...not for much longer though. The bright side is that the Dreamcast community is alive and well. I think you mentioned that you saw the Dreamcast for fairly cheap. I JUST bought mine about 4 months ago and I don't plan on buying another console for a while. I can't tell you much about the PS2 except wait until the XBox and Gamecube come out and hopefully that will drive down the prices of PS2 games and the actual console.
You REALLY need to email me if you plan on getting the Dreamcast...perhaps I can give you some tips

Yes, get the Dreamcast. For reasons why, check out my replies to other people that have asked this same question before. Let me just say that the DC looks like it is one machine that does one thing... as most consoles have been in the past, but it is indeed several machines in one affordable package!

  7. I've got a dreamcast and I'm really happy with it, if I were to buy a console today, it would also be the dreamcast. But if you don't mind waiting a bit, you should, just to see what the game cube is like. If not, go for the dreamcast. And hell, if you wait for the gamecube and then realise it sucks or it's too expensive or the types of games it has aren't for you, you can always buy a dreamcast then (probably for even less)... As for the XBox and PS2, I don't care at all for them, IMO bad implementations of bad technology, but that's just me...

  8. I don't know or care about the Dreamcast's technical specs, but I can tell you that it has one of the most impressive libraries that any console has ever boasted. There may only be 4 or 5 games left for release, but what's already out there is more than enough (unless you have entirely too much time on your hands).

It seems that there are finally some good games being developed for the PS2, but, although I have 7 consoles hooked up to my TV right now, I haven't bought a PS2 yet.

My brother goes to E3 every year, and his opinion is that the X-Box will have mediocre games but will sell because American gamers are uneducated lemmings.

For the record, he dislikes Nintendo (the company) but he really likes Gamecube (the console).

do the ps2 and x-box allow you to make back-ups to CD-R, or are the games larger than what a CD-R can hold?
I only dream in black & white...

  10. I know for a fact you can fit a PS2 game on a CDR. I think they take out all the extras when ripping like the movies and such. Just like DC, there is a large PS2 community out there too.
