  1. I've tryed ages ago, and the problems i encounterd were mostly Video issues...

The video would play in a slide show effect and the audio would resume as usual.

This only happend when i encoded XVID with a high fps at 900+, everything else is fine when using my trusty encoder TMPEGENc Plus 2.5 comboed with Video Studio to mix video to one file.

But anyways is there a fix to this yet?

  5. I had trouble converting XVid until I decided to do it this way:

I use a double conversion....first I use VDub to convert XVid to either HuffYuv or Uncompressed RGB, then I used TMPGEnc to convert the inermediate file to MPG2.

I usually just frameserve VDub > TMPGEnc. Frameserving Huffy is faster then with the uncompressed AVI, but the uncompressed probably yields a little better results.

  6. how would i convert the file to Huffy format?

  7. I have converted some Xvids to DVD using avisynth and CCE. For those where the framerate was 23.976 i used Virtualdub to convert it to 25 or 29.97 first, using direct stream copy (was surprised how well that worked, before i tried it i thought i had to save it to uncompressed avi or reencode to do framerate conversion). For audio i extract with virtualdub and encode to ac3 with besweet. Never had problems with this method, also used to make SVCD the same way.

I think I understand the cause of the problem.

I had similar problems playing back xVid files either via Windows Media Player or VirtualDUB.

The frame was skewed or playback stuttered, or the video appeared as a sequence of garbled blocks.

Eventually I tried a PC that had neither DivX nor xVdid codecs. I installed only the xvid codec and it played back fine.

I then tried the following trick with VirtualDUB.

When opening the file, I checked the "Popup Extended Open Options" checkbox of the open file dialog which brought the extended options in which I put:

"Force video format FOURCC Code to : " --> DX50
"Force video codec handler FOURCC code to": --> DX50

In my understanding, I forced VirtualDUB to process the avi file using the DivX codec.

I am not sure why, but doing this allowed me to process the avi correctly.

To save it using hufyuv (which is simply a way of bypassing the fight between the two MPEG-4 codecs) you go to the menu and under compression select hufyuv. Of course you must have it installed first (find it in the tools section).

As far as I am concerned, my experience tells me not to install both codecs on the same machine. I have a second PC which I will be using with xVid only, when it happens that a friend gives me his capture to convert to DVD.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Does anyone know a good tool that will DEMUX MPEG-4?

    if You could do this
processing the AUDIO and VIDEO seperately would
fix the problems all these program have upon inputting XVID encoded streams

The best such tool is VirtualDUB

Open the AVI file as normally, and then extract the audio with "Save WAV" and extract the video by selecting "No audio" in the audio menu.

The best method is as stated, use a Vdub Mod

To first extract audio stream - with it's correct extension

Then under video, select direct strema copy, go back to where you selected the audio stream - it's called sstream list under the 3rd or 4th heading over - and click DISABLE for the audio - it'll hash out.

Resave your video stream. I always add in the frame rate to the title of the new video only avi and the audio track, so I can then delete the source mux'd file - this assists greatly if you're then converting to a DVDr format.

Also, on XviD's I changed in my registry to have the DivX filter play them, and NOW they work great. Mine used to work fine, then out of the blue, they got f'd up too on conversions, but this trick worked great. If you can do a search in the forum and you should find the details....
