DVD Playback Question Please Help

I am noob I must admit. I understand the basics on backing up dvds, and playing them on my dvd player. However my dvd player does not support any playback of DIVX, AVI, SVCD, or VCD. Is there any program, or anything I can use to convert these files so I can play them on my dvd player. I have an Emerson 2303 and it only supports DVD+R/RW. Any help would be appreciated.

start at the top and work your way down

I would guess there are 187 applications for doing what you want, and 3 dozen different ways to use each program
