My old method comprised of these steps.
DVD2AVI --> to make d2v file and downmix dolby dig.
TMPGEnc to compress, (make mpg2 for SVCD) using 2 pass variable bitrate.
Then demux using TMPGEnc
use BBMPEG to remux/split
then use VCD imager,
and finally burn with CDR win.
Now I have done many movies this way (15 +, all NTSC, all film based)... have had good success, and have it down to a science..
Recently I have been using the newest version of DVD2SVCD and of course, as you know it uses CCE 2.5
I have found using DVD2SVCD, an average 1 1/2 movie takes about 10 hours total computer time, and only when it is switching tasks do I have to worry about not messing with computer.. when it is compressing with CCE, I can do whatever I want.
I have found the DVD2SVCD method makes a higher quality stream. and it also makes it a "more" compliant stream that my Apex 600a dvd player likes. My old method, I was only hitting about 2/3 of the rips the first time.. and then, using smartripper, it would mess up the rip some of the time (scary movie end credits 1 example) Vstrip eliminates this. The sound never goes out of sync, even when I fast forward, then resume to playing normally, my old method would lose sync, then it would catch up.. no such problems using the DVD2SVCD method.
I have used the DVDX method... while that product does do mpg2, it's quality really is not up to par at the moment, We shall have to keep our eye on this. I do like it tho, because the program is freeware, and you don't have to 'find' a copy of a certain program, like you do with the DVD2SVCD version (I sure as hell don't have 3,000 for a program).
I will now process all my movie rips using the DVD2SVCD method... Its default settings are right on the money, and I always do a 4 pass encode with CCE. I manually do the .bin file creation.
I just wanted to commend the author and let him know, that he has provided us with a top notch program, and has found the correct 'settings' to make a very high quality SVCD.
Oh, my hardware consists: AMD Athalon 1.4 gz, 60 GB 7200 rpm maxtor drive, 512 Double Data Rate (266mhz) memory, Iomega 12x burner, Voodoo 5500 with 64 meg, Cable modem hookup with Winroute pro running so daughter can do her "Cartoon Network" on her computer, 8 x dvd drive by Raite.
Sorry about the lengthy post, I just wanted to add my experiences here.
Thanks.
Mike

I agree with you mike, when it comes to quality nothing beats DVD2SVCD with CCD 2.5 encoding.
Question about your average time, you said it takes about complete 10 hours, is that with 4 passes? My takes about 25 hours with 4 passes. My processor is P3 733 mhz, with 640mb RAM. You have a faster processor but that should not make about 15 hours difference.

Besides not downsampling the audio from 48k -> 44.1 are you running temporal smoother or IVTC? Both add a fair amount of time. I've just been setting DVD2AVI force film on for my telecined source files, and use 3pass VBR.
On my Tbird 1.2Ghz I normally ave 0.915~1.025 in CCE. -
Yo, Iceman and Mike. Having used both methods I can also say dvd2svcd via CCE is an excellent choice for SVCD. A 3 pass with vbr ave 2000-2300 completed into bin/cue images in about 7 hours for 90min movie is what I can achieve. (1gig Athlon @1.4g, 512m sdr, 40g 7200rpm ata100 Maxtor, Geforce2MX etc) It's really like chalk and cheese in quality and time and i've been an avid supporter of the dvd2avi, tmpgenc etc path. This little prog (dvd2svcd) and CCE are a winning combo.
One question of you guys though, have you had CCE hang on you after the first pass at all? I have one rip that just hangs after 1 pass. I've created the svcd and it looks OK but it would look better after the 3 passes I request in dvd2svcd. Any thoughts, ps it's ripped with Smartripper V2.26.
Thanks for any hints.

Is it an easy process to make Chapters with DVD2SVCD/CCE combo?
I'm using smartripper, dvd2avi, tmpgenc, tcsv/vcdimmager now to make high quality svcd's with chapters.
I hear you can now use DVDx to set everything up and frameserver to tmpgenc, though I'm not sure about the chapter support with dvdx in that capacity. In fact every time I try to open an IFO into DVDx on my WinXP box, the program crashes.
