I've capturing my dv tapes to my computer in uncompressed avi format. When I convert to dvd mpeg2 using either mainconcept and tmpgenc I see noticeable compression artifacts and some pixelation in high motion scenes. My settings are already at maximum. Anyone know why this is happening or is this normal? Shouldn't the resulting mpeg file look just about as good as my dv tape? TIA

Hi zanos,
I've capturing my dv tapes to my computer in uncompressed avi format
I convert to dvd mpeg2 using either mainconcept and tmpgenc...
My settings are already at maximum.
...is this normal? Shouldn't the resulting mpeg file look just about as good as my dv tape?
Check out this guide:

...as it may prove helpful - it did for me! Remember to rate if when you're done...
Hope that helps. Good luck...There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

This is normal if your criteria is based on encoder preview. You should not have any problems watching your video on TV. Try it!

PS: Of course you don't expect your uncompressed DV to have the same quality as any compressed format (even if this is MPEG2 at 9000 bitrate). The difference is seen only when you play on PC.

Thanks for the responses.
In Tmpgenc I used a CQ setting of 100 at a bitrate of 8000. I used the high setting and motion search fast and the results of the mpeg file came out pretty much the same.
In Mainconcept I increased the search method and range to 11 and 21. That's about it. Quality a little worse than tmpgenc.
I understand that it won't look exactly alike but I really don't feel like there shouldn't have been a noticeable difference. The picture was sharp unlike vcd/svcd but contained some of the problems one sees when the bitrate is a bit lower than it should be like those formats. -
